Between Nights 1 and 2, I have to say that I like 2's colour more hands-down, but 1 has much stronger lines for me, and I love the sleek postmodern look that you got just perfectly here- the only imperfection is the shadow cast by the street sign somewhere off to the right, but there's not much you can do about that besides photoshop cheating. The way the light falls off toward the top is especially slick, and I am impressed with how little noise there is, especially for a night photo. (I notice above that you were on 100ISO, but even with that usually the sensor picks up noise the longer the shutter stays open- and as much as I like grain, I agree that the low ISO is the way to go, given how poorly higher speeds reproduce colour.)

Thank you. I like 2 the best as well, just for the colour. Actually, this shot got me an invite (my first ever invite) into a DA group. Itβs called Canon 40D. Iβm pretty happy about that. For no.1 I hadnβt even noticed the sign shadow. I noticed the actual sign and made sure it wasnβt in the picture but yeah, I might see if I can take it out.
Noise was priority number 1 for me here because I knew that if I had any at all the colour look wasnβt going to work and Iβd need to switch to B&W. I wanted that slick perfect black look and between you and me Iβm actually surprised that I got it (woo hoo!). So thatβs why I was shooting at 30+ seconds that night. I went with the 20+ AP to see if I could get any interesting shapes out of the direct light sources.

'gratz on the invite! I think that my recent conversion to low ISO (was shooting at 30 equivalent tonight) is largely due to you, but it really is better, and colour saturation alone makes it worthwhile.
Also, if you are going for direct light sources I would recommend getting a star filter. I have a hexagonal one, gives me six-pointed sources (See: [link] ) and is fantastic when you are shooting into bright light or want a stylized look. The downside, which your keen eyes can probably see but most people don't notice, is that it makes everything else just a bit fuzzy (that particular shot is especially bad, as you can see it was night and had to shoot a moving target at f1/8 and 1600 ISO.) I might also just have gotten a really cheap filter, that one was less than $10, so the nicer ones might not do that.

This shot could be a still from a science fiction movie. The way the top is fading into black makes it look kind of creepy and monumental.

Thank you. I've been playing Fallout 3 and watching Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles. I can't help but wonder if between them they have broken my brain, LOL.

Looks like you've got an eye for night shots. Congratulations! I like the angle, the eye for architecture and that you kept it in colour!

Thank you, I really appreciate that you took the time to comment on my work. I've just started shooting at night and needless to say I am thoroughly enjoying it. No doubt we'll be able to trade ideas and perspectives around the photos we post.

Yeah, I know what you mean. With the favs I take I like to try and replicate what the photographer has done in my own way and then hope that they see their influence in my work.

Hey Frank, how's it going? Dude, you should try night shooting. It' ksinda like having a brand new city to discover. I went out last night with one of my friends and in 4 hours we only had enough time to shot six buildings! Awesome.
It was almost completely dark when I shot this (except for the light from the door and a street light 10 or so meters away) so I figured I'd set the ISO to it's lowest setting,100, and see how I went. I'm very happy with the lack of noise and the purity of the blacks. Also, this shot needed only about two minutes of photoshop because I took a lot of time getting my composition set up. I'm glad you like it.

Yeah, ISO 100 is definitely a good idea. My Canon 40D is pretty close to perfect with noise when it's at 100 so my blacks are coming out perfect and not needing much editing in Photoshop at all. I'm on holidays too and have a couple of plans for going out shooting. My brother, you know him as Youwha [link] ) and I were thinking of going to the wind farm just outside of town. Could be fun. Also, I want to do some night time shooting around traffic lights and some major highways.
Next week I am going to Sydney for a conference on photojournalism. My friend used to work as a photographer at an Australian newspaper and he got us tickets. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes.
Lata,
