it was common practice for several warrior classes to drive their spear into the ground next to where they intended to face any oncoming threat... not so much as a test, but a way of life.
ghost warriors and dog soldiers would do this to demonstrate the basic unyeilding nature of their resolve. It was the ultimate demonstration of courage. I stand and fight, I fear nothing, I will not be moved in this, etc...
A few of these warrior classes were so feared that even today depicting an image of them or looking upon one can still bring death. If you put this on a t-shirt some places out west you could clear a room just by walking in.
this beleif comes from the fact that these warriors were never, to be seen even by their own tribesman unless one was to die. They were bound to a nocturnal life as protectors and warriors, as were their spouses. they lived on the outskirts, without emergence during the day, and achieved legendary status over time.
the image of the spear bound soldier, is most commonly the last sigil as the tribe had already fled. These lone men would await entire calvaries bound to a single position, often killing dozens and even hundreds of enemies in order to buy time for those whom they devoted their lives to.
I am actually working on an image dedicated to this practice as well, but with a supernatural element... I know some of my people might find the idea disrespectful of fearful, but My image is going to be a spiritual dedication for me... So hopefully it should be ok.

Sorry for the long delay of my reply. Interesting piece of info there. By "your people" do you mean you're an indian yourself?

This was a very common practice among Aztecs, but for prisioners. I they win thwy could survive, if not they were another sacrifice.

Absolutly stunning. This picture has that kinda old look to it, like it was make on rahide. Awsome shading, very good job!

Thanks, considering the short time I made it I guess it's ok. The rawhide effect is managed by using very little water, almost dry brushing the shades on a coarser type of paper.

Thank you although the only thing I'm actually somewhat satisfied with is the face of the indian. I was in a hurry when I did this one and his face was about the only thing I could spare the time for any detailing on.
