This is a really cool piece and I love the background along with the action. I also think her hair came out really awesome!

Since you want me to pick this apart for you however I guess I could say that the contrast on the rest of the body could be improved to match the face. Underneath her eyes could use a tad softening and she could look less like Uma Thurman and more like Vampirella. The guns could use more finishing and the head looks like it may be a tad on the small side.

You may also want to try and bring her into the background with a backlight.

Is any of this airbrushing? the background looks like a "wet on wet" method was used, it's sooo beautiful, but her skin tone is sooo perfect... how did you get it so smooth?

mikemayhew In reply to AthenaTT [2010-08-28 17:38:58 +0000 UTC]

I use a tiny bit of airbrush to smooth out many layers of very thinned acrylic wash.

Ahh I thought maybe so. That's so great. I admire airbrushing so much, and I just don't see a lot of traditional airbrushing any more (carnival t-shirts aside ) You're exceptionally skilled at it

Reminds me of Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction . Which is fine with me . I think the piece looks sexy and dangerous at the same time . I don't recall ever seeing Vampirella with guns , but I love it .

I see in your gallery that your work with the expressions of the characters is very very good!

You always make your characters very natural, very realistic. I think this is the greatest part of this illustrations, you feel the soul of the characters.

Love the eyes and lips of Vampi here... well, not only the eyes and lips!!

Congratulations

Cool!
Did you ever mention why you've switched from acrylic to watercolor in your newer work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mikemayhew In reply to MichaelDooney [2009-11-05 19:40:27 +0000 UTC]

watercolor is more forgiving, and I can be more experimental with my color choices since the paint mixes on the the paper, as opposed to acrylic which just stays put.

Truly the best Vampirella and use of acrylics I've seen to render her. I'd love to get some insight into your process and add something new to my repertoire. Cheers!
