Description Date: 2011
Technique: Oil on canvas
Size: 11 x 14 inches (28cm x 35.5cm)

The birds are still going strong! 5 done and 4 left to go.

As before when I do a series of paintings with a common theme, I'm finding that my technique tends to improve as I get deeper into the series. I'm getting tons of practice doing birds (obviously), but also weather, mostly clouds, and similar looking things like smoke, dust and ash. This is fine of course but I find myself looking back at the first few and wonder if I shouldn't do a bit more work on them, improve them a bit. Maybe just leave them alone? hmmm....

Thanks Shannon!
Any reason why?

I would have to say it's because all of the elements are really working well together. The tilt of the horizon and the direction of the sand storm and sky match the direction the bird is looking, emphasizing the bird. I guess the combination of elements makes me feel like there is a lot of movement in the image...or a lot of potential movement in the case of the bird

Awesome reply! Glad to hear that you can feel movement from this piece, that's always difficult to do with a static image. It's one of my favourites too!

I'm really loving the texture of the sand juxtaposed to the sleek bird feathers in this one

nice!! I like the expression on the birds face, like "are you serious?!"

Thanks Mike,
Good comment about expressions. I totally agree with you that that's what he's probably thinking though I didn't really intend it that way, it just happened. It's interesting how a subtle turn of the mouth, the way an eye is drawn, etc. can convey all that information. Plus it's also interesting that we humans always see 'expressions' on animals faces!

yes that is interesting, we are programed to read emotions

You should leave the earlier ones alone so you can see how far you've come! This is fantastic--I really like how you draw things that are so original.
