Description
F-86D "Saber Dog" of the 82nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, USAF Air Defense Command, Travis AFB, California, 1958.
Originally the F-86D was designated the F-95 but then redesignated as an improved version of the F-86 Saber of the Korean War. Though the F-86 and the F-86D superficially look very similar, the "Dog" only shares 25% of parts commonality with its Korean War cousin. In addition to the distinctive radar dome above the nose intake, the F-86D has a larger fuselage, larger tail surfaces and a bigger more powerful engine. It's primary Cold War mission was air defense of the North American Continent against Soviet bombers.
