mahalo, Patrick! that "glow" is called vog (volcanic fog), which we sometimes refer to as "Pele's breath." when the prevailing winds shift and come from the southwest, it blankets the islands. can be tough on asmatics and others with chronic breathing problems. but, that's the risk of living with Pele.

so long as Madame Pele is busy, yes. however, usually it's only affecting the Big Island. we get it only when there's a shift in the wind, which isn't that often, fortunately . . . the weather sucks when that happens, brah. (hot & muggy; yuck)

Excellent lighting in the background, it gives those vibrant scarlet robes an extra flare to it. And for some reason I love that checkerboard design in the back. Amazing work.

A red monk, that conjures up a lot of connotations.

Implying nothing specific, on the contrary. I read up on Pele and once again found that all religious/mythological symbolism is shared all over the world. Red as in fire is the colour of creation and destruction at once. And so is the goddess of volcanoes, destroying the Hawaiian islands and at the same time adding to them. Red as in anger that can also have a cleansing/liberating quality. Red as in blood that is the fire that gives us life, but also the war that kills us, etc. And the attire seems pretty universal as well. Religious adepts seem to shun shirts and pants, but that's probably a historical thing, which again might suggest they're clinging to the past and not looking to the future, but that aside. Monks wearing a robe without a hood seem to be open to the world, the hooded ones more introspective. Ah don't get me going on this subject, this is no place for a pamphlet let alone an annotated paper
You chose a robe as worn by catholic monks, there are some stories about red monks that would stand your hair on end. Though none of them historically corroborated.
Anyway, still a bit puzzled by the white & red checkered globe. I see some "cloudiness" in the red checkers, does that signify lava? What about the white ones then?

wow, brah! you give me way too much credit. i just like using spheres. to me, that red-checked globe is just a stand in for the power of belief behind the believer; in this case, Madame Pele. how it's further interpreted is for others to choose. one can suppose that the minion is about to be consumed by the very lava he worships. on the other hand, one can choose to see how his belief places him safely in the forefront of this devotion. i'm sure it can be taken in other ways, as well. in the end, i just like how it turned out and hoped that others would like it, as well. really, i'm not that adept at symbolism to purposely plan how these things play out; albeit, i do love myth and the role symbolism plays in the expression of myth.
btw, your knowledge and interpretation of the goddess Pele is very insightful. i've actually seen her busy at work off the south point of the Big Island (Loihi, on Hawai'i). truly, truly a magnificent sight, brah! i felt that i was truly watching a god at work. some folks believe she still walks among us. sometimes as a nasty old woman; other times as a beautiful, sensuous and flirting young wahine. is said that if she chooses you, she will seduce you and you'll perish from her caress. she really is both a destroyer and a creater; and, represents that duality of nature. hey, maybe that's the meaning behind a red & white checkered sphere right there, Marcel!?!
