Description Showing a dinosaur fetus surrounded by its safe egg shell from which a DNA-like structure emerges, this is a sculpture I made for art class.
The task was letting an ice cube melt in our palm and paying attention to our feelings. Then we were supposed to write down literally everything coming to our mind and create a figure resembling one of our thoughts as a process of abstraction.

My association consisted of something primeval, something ancient like like the ice age and life itself. The air bubbles captured within my ice cube reminded me of amber with organic inclusions, from which you can still extract DNA (explaining said structure in my sculpture). Thus, the idea of a dinosaur, a creature of the past, was born. Since the ice was cool and becoming painful to hold after a while, and since it was quickly melting away, I also wanted to include an aspect of fugacity. It is portrayed by the vulnerable fetus, only being protected by the fragile shell of its egg.
Finally, the silver wire shining through the black colour looks as if the painting has not been finished, standing for the eternal immaturity the little dinosaur is trapped in.

The photo was taken by a classmate as we were having an exhibition at school. I'm afraid the dinosaur is out of focus, but this is the only photo I have atm. I enhanced the contrast and cut it to shape. Materials used: air-drying clay and silver wire.

This is really creative! I would be at a lost if I was given that assignment. Good, applicable inspiration comes rarely and far in between.
It looks really artistic, totally something I'd buy at a art store to enrich my bland room
The abstractness is just right, I mean I know modern art is all great but sometimes it's so abstract such as burning holes in old newspaper that I just personally don't even know what to think of it. But this is just wonderfully interesting.
and wire work is hard, once I had to built a sculpture with copper wires and it was painful to say the least, right up there with wood works, I almost sliced off a finger with those huge machines o(>﹏<)o.

In the beginning I thought that too. It was a difficult task to decide for a specific form, but this impression of the word 'ancient', which I spontaneously associated with dinosaurs, somehow stuck in my mind. I just wanted to avoid making a polar bear or a penguin on ice like some others did.
I agree with your statement about modern art - I've always found it hard to view a black canvas with a big, red spot in the center as a form of artistic expression.
I've never tried to work with wood, not in a sculpting way (we only had to build a miniature room from wooden boards once). I can hardly look when our teacher uses the disk saw to cut something >.< The mere imagination hurts XD
Thank you very much, I'm glad to hear that you like it

Hehe, danke!

Mach weiter so
