I know what you mean. I don't understand many colour tutorials I've seen either. I've never been good with just hearing facts and not seeing how they are applied, but that seems to be how most tutorials are set up. WAHH!! I love this! It's super useful... im so bad at letting myself go and use opposite colors to color a picture... it just looks wrong to me when i do it.. but u do it so well that it looks AMAZING! i really like that kitty <3

Mostly it's about finding the right balance when it comes to complementary What I like doing is keeping them low saturation and near the value of all the other colours (just by being a different colour, it pulls a lot of interest), or else just keeping the amount of that colour used to a minimum just where I want the eyes to focus on. Another thing that can help is by putting in a third colour that is between the complementary colours to basically have a sort of stretched out analogous colour scheme.
