Description This damn spider made me jump. I had been getting ready to wash dishes and looked up and there he was. Good thing the window was between us.
Not a bad shot through the window.

I could have sworn I posted my picture of the same spider, I know I used it for a photo contest. I'll have to upload it sometime once I find my series of pictures. It's a really cool spider to look at some of the designs down the center it creates.

Researched it on various sites the information seems to be contradicting.I used the common info from each site to get a pretty good idea about the animal.

Apparently, the banana spider is a common name used for two entirely different species of spiders one in North America and and one in South America. North America possesses venom similar in nature to the venom of the black widow but less potent. It's not likely to kill a human. If you want the spiders away from your home it says to tear down its web and it will relocate.

If you get bit its a good idea to see a doctor (obviously) but its likely not going to do any serious harm.

The South American version is contradicting. Some say it is very toxic others say it is such only to smaller children and animal.

Don't know if you wanted to know all that but its there if its needed and wanted.

What a beautiful spider and such a great shot. We don't have those types of spiders around here. Are they Venomous?

nice. it does look like a banana spider, but a little different. my mom's got a family of them right outside her front door. the head momma is almost 4 inches from front legs to back legs and her body is huge. there are about 4 smaller females around her. the webs look amazing. I can't seem to get a good picture of any of them. my mom wanted to knock it all down at first until she noticed that there weren't anymore bugs around the entry way!! now she's very interested in them, and has been watching their growth.

I watched an old movie once where they tied a guy to a mast on a boat and left him to die. the boat slowly makes its way down river but in the mean time these banana spiders are building webs all over the boat and the guy is hungry and when one of the spiders gets close to his head he snaps out and grabs it with his teeth. He then eats it. These banana spiders were as big as a banana. Never forgot that scene just forgot the name of the movie.

Little true story for you.
Years ago I was a sleep in my room, I got up and went to the bathroom. Went back to bed and woke up about 3-4 hours later. I am laying there looking up then I screamed jumped out of bed still screaming. There was a 4 inch banana spider over my bed making a web. To this day I have no clue how it got into my room. It was bigger than my hand and I have a kinda small hand I wear a size 6 ring.
I use to catch tarantula's when I was about 12-14 yrs old living in Arizona this thing was bigger.

This picture makes me all twitchy. I hate spiders.

It's hard to tell from the picture; how big was it?

MistressVampy In reply to Omega23 [2009-07-21 05:39:48 +0000 UTC]

it is about 2-2 1/2 inches think this is called a banana spider. I had seen one about 4 inches long before.

Hell the other night walking back from mom's I put a plastic cup over this 3 inch spider that looked like a wood tarantula. I put the lid on the cup and by the afternoon it was dead. My daughter and I checked it out to see if it was a tarantula or not. we still aren't sure. but it was BIG
