Please forgive the glare on the upper left cloud area...After waiting a small eternity for it to dry (glare while wet), I have tried everything I can over several days to get a ‘good’ pic of this to post even though it had dried. Still not a good pic but good enough!
When I started it I literally just decided to throw some blue and red up there for a sky and try to tease out some water on the bottom. Was more for fun/study/experiment not a plan to paint anything specific. Ironically the blue streaks in the water were an accident and I almost lost my mind when it happened (I like even washes like I’ve tried with watercolors) but I decided to try to focus on ‘happy accident’ even though it looked ugly. As I painted I brushed out those blue streaks a little and when I stepped back I decided that I could put some little breakers / whitecaps on them. And it worked!

As for the critiques, I'm not sure where the light in this picture is coming from. Maybe establishing where the sun is and adding cloud shadows based on that could help?

Yep, you could do it. It really is about making a 'representation' of a 'whatever'-- not trying to make an exact duplicate. Thud some clouds in, soften them up, paint some water, and some lines or fluff to make it look like water with waves, reflections, etc. Peoples brains fill in the blanks pretty good. You just have to paint the 'idea'. It is we who are hard on ourselves...
That's the story of "The Owl". I remember Bob Ross would just thump in leaves so that's what I did and voila! Try to see past the 'ugly phase' that every art project goes through... Just let it fall off your pen, pencil, brush, stylus, finger, etc etc...
