Messing around with the "Bob Ross" style just to learn different things in different ways. I didn't sign it because it was more to learn about the process (how does the paint feel and react? What does each brush do when I do what he just did? etc etc) See if you can spot all the errors! I will paint over this canvas at a later date (have to save money somehow among all the media!)

So what I did learn is that in the oil 'wet on wet' less paint is more (better). I did great on applying the liquid white (base coat) and it is really interesting how it does blend and 'smudge' with each new layer to make those great effects and gradients. I really love the 'reflections' effect.

When he pulls out the paint from top of the mountain (or anywhere else) he pulls it very thin. Not as easy to discern unless you handle the product... Which is why the trees and such on the center and left are not so 'crisp'. The paint was too thick for successive layers to stick. On the right there was only the 'happy clouds' layer and a little mist so it worked out great!

Also, as I became frustrated with the knife work, the colors merged in the middle of the palette (another reason to do less as more. Experience is a dear teacher...) so some of the colors are 'off' though not terrible. I could have formed the mountains planes/slopes better. Oh well. Still looks like a mountain!

Another observation on (oil) color: it deepened beautifully after some hours of 'rest'. It was vivid when I finished but it was positively rich and velvety(?) after resting. Wow!!! Now if it would only dry... (takes a little less than forever.)

Overall I am happy with it! I did not set out to make an amazing painting, only to learn and have fun. Success!!!

I realize more and more this is becoming the story. I still love all of your comments and questions, so please keep adding to the story!!! And hopefully someday I will have time and talent enough to collate this into a 'real' story...
