Thank you for the comments! I have been wanting to visit there. I have seen maps of the area...guess there are a lot of hills/mountains around there?
I also have some Nazi flags and etc. that he got after taking some outpost just before this battle happened.

You are welcome and you are right, there are a lot of hills around there. ^^ Keep his awards and all the other things safe, it's great to have such things from your own family.
The story made me curious and I found some informations, certainly you know it already. Your mothers uncle served in the 301st Infantry Regt./94th, his rank was PFC and he was killed in action on 28th February 1945(By the way, the 28th February is my birthday).
Here [link] is a link and on the lower right side is an extra part about the battle around the Zerf area.
Zerf is in the National Park Saar-HunsrΓΌck and unfortunately is this site [link] just in German, but on the right side are some pictures of the area. The site about the Saar River [link] is in English.
Certainly I make next year again vacation in this area. If you know some places and you want to see them, I could try to take some photos for you.

He rescued four comrades and died when he tried to rescue another one, I thought you could get the Medal of Honor for such a brave behavior.

It is awesome that you are doing this for those who served our country and lost their lives.
I can totally relate to this series my dad was a private first class in the army and my granfather was a captain, boy does he have stories to tell.

That's amazing...

I love the shot... it captured the warmth of the metals very well.

The man's story, itself, is amazing too...

I'm sitting here wishing that we could give such heros something more than bits of metal.

Bravo. An excellent picture.

Dude. Awesome objects right there. Not only pretty, but imagine all the history that goes with them.

I'd say the shine on the Purple Heart medal is a bit distracting (as was the shine on the watch in "last Moments") otherwise, the colors are so righ in here. Nice crisp focus too. The fabric looks amazing, and the star is so smoothly lighted.

I know the Purple Heart is for wounds in battle. What about the Gold Star? it's a medal for what achievement?

mooboy In reply to blackzer0 [2004-07-03 12:16:39 +0000 UTC]

Bronze Star is achievement, I believe. Sorry, I said Gold. It's bronze.

Yeah, the shine is annoying. You should have seen what I did to try and avoid it!
