I should hope so, I think apostronaut spent over a week redoing the model from scratch. People don't seem to like her models much, but considering she's the only one willing to sit down and do the work, I'm fine with it all.

It took me two weeks, with the HWM flexes and everything Β

Right? I've done hwm on a preexisting head before and that was pretty tedious, I can't imagine ALSO doing a whole new body and hair. Ignore the people who just say stuff is bad, odds are 99% of them have never tried modelling. Especially not source modelling, which is doubly more ass-backwards than normal modelling. I've never gotten the hang of doing models from scratch, either, I can only manage to edit stuff that already exists.

I don't really mind constructive critiques for my models because it's not ever going to be perfect and there's always room for improvement (and different people want different things, dear lord everybody wants to be my art director lol). It's just that the massive influx of shit I got after the comic came out bummed me out a little. I have to put in so much work for so little gain to create, and later on fix the things I overlook. I only have so much time and patience. I know my work isn't the best compared to some of the top names out there (I only started doing 3D a year ago), but nobody else wants to do it (or say they'll do but never deliver). I'm trying my best, and sometimes someone's best efforts are never going to be good enough. I also don't think modelling for source is that different from modelling for other game engines, but porting them to source, well... things don't always transfer over 100% lol. I like your edits btw soz for the rant

Aaah no it's okay, and thanks. I definitely hear you on being the only person who actually DOES the models you say you'll do, I've been telling myself to do a bunch of hwm heads for a long time, and though I find the work simple since I use reference, I can't bring myself to sit down and do it the few times I actually have spare time. It's also one of the reasons I've never released any of the models I do. I know two or thee people will love it, but more people won't like them, I know people will be confused on how to use stuff, and I don't consider it worth it especially knowing that I CONSTANTLY edit my stuff and I can't exactly force people to update a model even on the workhop, knowing that I never do because updates break whatever edits I've made to vtfs and stuff. But sincerely, if no one's told you yet, thank you for making this stuff! Of the other people I see still actively modelling tf2, a lot of them have you pledge a mildly ridiculous amount of money on patreon or something to get access to their models, so I'm incredibly grateful you're doing this all for free. The internet is full of complainers, I've found that people who like things usually say nothing and then the people who don't like things drown everything out, which makes me wish I knew how that mentality started, but I doubt I ever will. I look forward to whatever project you have next!

Also side note, I'd consider two weeks a fantastic time frame for making a model, especially from scratch. Long story made short that I just backspaced though, I've been editing a pre existing model gradually since April/May of last year and the other person making the head started in February of last year and we still don't have it. But I can't say much without people going 'oh wait I know, it's this character' and I can't answer them without giving away secrets, so I'll stop here.

The HWM system isn't so bad once you get the hang of it, but yes, the problem with using flexes to do facial animation is that it's probably the most tedious and labor-intensive way to create controls for a face. A facial bone rig would be easier to create, although when made for SFM, it's pretty crap since you don't have an interface specifically made for controlling those bones like you would if it just stayed in the program it's made in (like maya) o: Yeah nah, it's no fun to do HWM when you're the only one who's going to use it, so I understand your dilemma (and it's a reason why I release a lot of the models I only want to make one poster for; it's such a waste of time and effort to just have it sit in my computer never to be used again ahaha). I didn't realize people were paywalling their models, it's the first I've heard of. Worry not, my models and any possible future ones will stay free. Personally it just feels wrong for me to paywall this sort of thing because the characters I model aren't mine in the first place. But if those people are full time freelance 3D artists and they need it to pay bills to live, I can see why they'd do it, so I really don't hold it against them. And yes, people are more likely to comment about complaints than praise (as seen even here in the deviantart forums. 2mil posts in the Complaints section, 161k posts in the Praise section ) It's just a fact of life, it happens everywhereΒ Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― And thanks

Ohhhh Interesting, I won't prod you about it if it's a secret, but I'll be lurking around to see if it ever comes out

Right? The one face I've done hwm on started as me doing facial bones on instead, up until I realized I REALLY wanted stretch/compress files on it, which didn't work with facial bones due to there being no flexes. It took me 2 days of constant work to do the flexes with a dmx of femscout's head sitting beside it in blender while I worked, and took maybe a day and a half for me to 'perfect' the facial bones, which still didn't work that well in the end. I'm sure if I had done more passes on the hwm to make it not clip through its own face when the character smiles, or have a gaping maw for a mouth, it would have taken longer, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. On top of that I need to figure out how to add in custom flexes, like mouth_sideways or stuff for hair like the pauling model has. No matter where I put the flexes or what I do with them, they stay on the dmx file but don't show up in sfm, I'm assuming it's something to do with the qc and maybe vta file. I'll have to keep looking in to it.

Oh god lol, the mouth is the worst part when it comes to the flexes. Good luck with that.Β

Many thanks! Probably be a while before I sit down and make anyone hwm again, but we'll see what disasters happen when I do.
