For the most part I think it is too, at least in the anime series. Samurai X is a totally different story. 0.o...

Samurai X was Kenshin's past, which is yeah - sad.
Still exists in the anime series though.

The newer one involving Kaoru was... well the Author himself hated it. xD It's definitely not canon.
The whole POINT of the original series was for Kenshin to atone for his past crimes, and he kinda goes through hell for that.
That OVA just belittled all his efforts - basically laughing and going HAHA! YOU CAN NEVER BE FORGIVEN!

That's why I never bothered to watch it The summaries were bad enough.

Personally I loved Samurai X but I agree that the story was very warped. Apparently they're coming out with another Kenshin Series according to Shonen Jump so I'm excited .
