the clerk i a rather Interesting piece. The look of the robot is creepy but at the same time retro in it's design that dosen't draw the eye away from it. the look of it face is the creepyest thing about it, as it is the most damaged part of the robot but the rest of the robot is in a better condition, it make you wonder what happen to the robot as the damaged has given it a sadden face, a sadden face that stairs at you and get to you but not in the way of giving you nightmare. the body is the coolest thing about it, it has bone thin arm and leg and the detail is incredibly good. The right sort of colours have been use to make it look worn. the hat and the jacket gives it emotion, which is something you don't see in robot. they give the robot a sort of mad hatter look.
this figure has been so well done and you can see the person who made it put care and thought into this robot.
it has a sort of nightmare before christmas look, in fact it look just like some of the tim burtons work.
overall this figure is great and whoever made this is a brilliant artist.

Very well thought out and very original. You have shown great attention to detail. I have one thought about the jacket. Your character is rusted and very ancient looking, but the jacket is pristine and new. Was that your intention? Or would you consider making a separate jacket that is weathered and patched. I did notice slight frays in the coat tails and that helps a little bit. It would also help then to maybe match with his top hat. These are just some thoughts, you can do with as you please. Other than this it is an excellent work of which you should be very proud.

I'm not sure I agree with the statement that this is "original", have you ever seen the movie "nightmare before christmas"? Obviously not. Not that this is a problem, artists have drawn inspiration from each other through the ages, and made really cool stuff from doing so. Still. This is not original, it is awesomely made and very nice looking, but original it is not.

I'm sorry, I do not know if this comment is specifically directed at me or the artist. But I have seen Nightmare Before Christmas about a million times over and is one of my favorites. And I'm not wrong in saying that this character is original because there is no character in the movie that SPECIFICALLY looks like this. That makes it original. And from what I've learned from my 4 years of art school so far is that you need to draw inspiration from other artists (ie Tim Burton if that be the case) to better improve you're own work. It's all a learning process. I don't wish to offend you in any way by this, I'm just stating what I've learned and wanted to provide a helpful critique to a work I thought was really interesting.

We simply have different definitions of original.

The clerk's couture can be better looking and maintained than the clerk himself.
The employer of the clerk may dictate to the clerk the manner of dress the employer would have the clerk present himself in when conducting the employer's prescribed tasks. But, every other aspect that makes up the body of the clerk is the clerk's alone.
As is, it is spectacular and unique. I call this truly inspirational and real art.
I was astonished when I first saw this as a work in progress. Certainly, it is the artist's prerogative to determine when his work is complete. But, for what it's worth, I love it just the way it is.

Wowzer! That's possibly one of the nicest things that anyone has said about my work. Thank you very much. I think both critiques are valid and fair.

That's a great point. I guess I was just scared to make any permanent changes :S I was going to burn some patches in, but unfortunately the material melts instead of burns

I'll use some paint to add a grittiness to it. Thank you very much for the useful and thought out critique

how do you make these if i may ask?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MorffinCreations In reply to ShadowofaSunday [2012-11-18 22:01:15 +0000 UTC]

They're all made of of polymer clay, specifically Super Sculpey and Sculpey Firm. I then bake them and paint them

ShadowofaSunday In reply to MorffinCreations [2013-03-24 23:22:00 +0000 UTC]

wow! I work with polymer clay ALL THE TIME but wouldve never expected it to be so strong! Do you use wire support or frame?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MorffinCreations In reply to ShadowofaSunday [2013-03-25 07:49:39 +0000 UTC]

I do use an aluminium armature. Sculpey always surprises me with its strength, sometimes I'll drop a piece and find it completely intact.

Sure, I sell a few every now and again. The only problem is postage as they're quite fragile. Also, now that my exhibition is over I have no really need to hang on to any of them I was thinking about doing a speed sculpt video to show everyone how I go about making some.
