He wanted a sexy orc with some very specific accessories.

Tried to not get stuck on any one area with this one. One of my faults is that I'll spend like 80% of my time on a single area, usually the face, and as a result the rest of the painting suffers. With this, I made a conscious effort not to do that.

Also, I tried not to second guess myself and have more confidence in my initial strokes. Instead of rendering and reeditting and rendering some more. I just put stuff down and stuck with it.

You did a good job with this piece.  I would rather fight with her than against her.

She looks very cute and sweet, I'd totally introduce her to my parents. "Mom, Dad - this is Trishia Bloodfeast. We're together now and it seems I'm being grabbed and carried out of the room beCAUSE TRISHIA SEEMS TO BE IN THAT SPECIAL MOOD! SEE YOU LATER, MOM A..." *door slams*

She looks really sexy but i read all the comments and not one person pointed out the fact that she has no tusk....it's not an orc unless it has tusk it's just some hot green chick. Really i mean no offense at all but lets step away from the proportion issue and get to the fact that this doesn't look like an orc....just a sexy alien babe. Beam me up Scotty!!!!!!!

Okay im trying not to judge. but thats WORLD OF WAR CRAFT. i mean WOOOOOT!
i mean GOD. world of war craft is wrong with almost everything even the ''lich king'' who isnt a lich but somthing more like some lucky idoit with a powerfull necromancery weapon. i think EVERYONE agrees that following facts from wow got more errors then using your own fantasy mind and logic -_- please dont complain on my grammer or spelling error's...aint english e.e

I won't complain about your "grammer" or spelling errors, because they simply prove you're an idiot and not worth paying attention to. All fantasy art influences other fantasy art, that's how art works. There are shades of Tolkein influences in WoW, and that's no coincidence. To suggest most artists come to the same conclusion on their own without any corruption from other sources is either stupid or naive. I think it's cute that you suggest that one should use "logic" when making fantasy art, because you know, everything in fantasy is perfectly logical.

Sweet that's two of three done, and she looks fantastic I wish her legs and the right arm were a bit less blurry but other than that sweet. I am very happy with it, you got pretty much every thing I asked for the sword the mask the robes I am satisfied.

So have yourself a cookie.

Pretty good, I like your painterly stuff, watch your proportion though, might want to measure that arm against her legs, or maybe its just the optical illusion because of the sword. heh.

If you don't like getting stuck in one area, have you try controlling the resolution of your painting by pen sizes? keeping it zoned out and work the whole page from large pen to small pens. It speed stuff up in speed paints that can then be use as basis for painting.

morganagod In reply to feitian [2010-04-28 14:02:14 +0000 UTC]

It's not critiques, its proportional critiques

1. They're always wrong. Individual proportions vary greatly. So even if I were rendering this in a naturalistic way, proportional idiosyncracies could exist.

2. They're hypocritical. No artist is 100% proportionally accurate. Your work is full of proportional errors and that in no way affects the quality of the work.

3. Finally, in this particular case, and it most cases actually, it ignores context. This is an orc, a fantasy creature. [link] Proportional accuracy isn't exactly at the top of the list when depicting them.

Well, in general I try getting my figures into the wrist-crotch strike zone and and I found that it is a pretty good rule of thumb across the board, but I guess that's just a matter of personal taste.

I concede that you are correct in your points, though this seen to elicit stronger response then I expected from someone as good as you are.

Its a personal pet peeve that I am passionate about and have developed over years of hearing these critiques directed at both me and my peers. I even made some art centered around that kind of critique [link]

Its a pet peeve because its almost the only thing anyone ever critiques. Thanks to people like Loomis, the human body has been reduced to a mathemetical equation in the form of proportional anatomy. Its been so widely accepted because it is the nature of the human mind to simplify things in a mathematical way, and it generally yields acceptable results. The thing is, following a mathematical formula to the letter leads to anemic artwork.

The problem is, is that it holds people back from making great art and becomes a crutch at best. So many people complain about same face or same body, well that's a symptom of how prevalent this proportional attitude is. Of course you're going to have same face and same body if everything is broken down in to a fucking measurement system. Now, the counter argument would be that ignoring proportional anatomy leads to completely fucked up figures, but I would argue that most of the people that have trouble with anatomy actually have trouble with perspective and form. They can draw a rib cage, just not in perspective. They can draw a leg, it just looks flat. Giving a person with a perspective problem a critque on their proportional anatomy does them a disservice. They certainly won't improve if they think that a greater knowledge of anatomy will make them be a better artist.
