Description This is my newest print of a Sycamore I spent some time with last summer. I worked as a lifeguard last summer, and this tree leaned over the fence and sitting underneath it was the best spot. When I look at this tree I think of hot summer afternoons and how much I enjoyed sitting in its shade.

I am selling the edition on etsy [link]

Reminds me of the sycamore tree at my grandmothers house. It has over 100 years old and huge. My grandmother moved and the house was torn down years ago. The sycamore was chopped down a couple of years ago. It was still alive, they did not need to chop it down! It was my friend and I talked to it when I was a child. Sycamore trees are my favourite.

cool as ever hanna, how meny of the 46 are you actualy happy with? I usually loose about 25% per colour layer i do. on a recent run of 29 i got only four good out that was just a three colour reduction!

ARGH! Deviantart just ate my answer.

To answer your question. That edition has 46 which means I tore down 50 and 46 were good enough to include in the edition. If the registration is a tiny bit off I don't worry about it. So overall I have a very low percentage of bad prints. Of course some prints are more problematic and the more layers you have the more chances you have to mess it up.

25% loss overall is pretty normal from what I have heard although 25% per layer seems rather frustrating. I don't know what kind of registration system you are using. But you might like to try pin hole registration which is what I use. I had been planning on making a registration tutorial for a while now so I might as well get on that. Just so you can see if I am doing anything differently.

If you ever have a chance to print mounted linoleum on a letterpress. The registration is built into the machine and it is glorious perfect registration. And it's fast so you can whip out a huge edition.

thanks hanna We dont have a letter press here so I use mount board and tape this to the bed only real problem was my lino was a bit old and because i removed so much it stretched about 4mm by the time i was down to my third colour, better luck next time, dave

Oh wow I didn't know lino could stretch like that! That must have been a hard day in the shop.

Do you think the stretching was because you were carving really deep? Usually lino holds together pretty well. LOL I did have one time where I set the pressure too high and crushed my lino. That wasn't fun. If it happens again you might try gluing your block down to a thin piece of plywood to give it a bit more solidity.

hanna i did think of this originaly but I was so caught up with the process and at the time I was sharing the press with 3 other artists all trying to get their work done at the same time, my next big print I will do on mdf light so the warping will be no problem, dave

When I saw this I said "Damn, this is badass."

And your comments below about registration are helpful. I hope I have the option of pinhole registration next time I do a lino.

Thank you very much! If you want to give pinhole registration a go but encounter difficulties when you try it. I would be happy to walk you through it.

this is beautiful!
is it a color reduction or is it a multiple plate sort of thing?

Thank you It's a color reduction. Multiple plates would just be insane!

your registration is impeccable! how do you do it so well?

mouse2cat In reply to merray-g [2010-04-05 17:48:42 +0000 UTC]

Well I printed it on a Vandercook letterpress which has a built in registration system but I ended up having a lot of issues and not all of the edition is this prefect I mean I can be a perfectionist and all. But this one here is the best out of 46

I have had a lot of success with pin hole registration although I did not use that system for this print. Thank you for your comments by the way, you're very sweet.

hey, don't thank me! i'm a printmaker too and i've never been able to wrap my head around registration related issues - especially with multi coloured linos and lithos

how do you sort of plan what to cut away each time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mouse2cat In reply to merray-g [2010-04-19 03:24:54 +0000 UTC]

My "plans" are simply me sketching onto the block. The only tricky part is poking your brain into thinking about one color at a time. Like I am carving away everything that is, yellow... and just don't worry about the other colors until the yellow layer has been carved off and green has been printed. You can break down an image by looking at one color at a time.

If you struggle with visualizing reduction you may try working with a posterized image. This digitally reduces the number of colors in your reference picture. I did that for this print [link] and something just clicked for me.

Registration can be a pain and there are so many different opinions on what's best. I love pin hole registration because it is perfect even if it leaves 2 tiny holes in all my prints. You know I could probably do a pin hole registration tutorial for people. That would be fun.

Yay, another print from you! So beautiful, as always. I love all the textures you achieved, and all the details! Is this linoleum again? I can't imagine how long this would take.

mouse2cat In reply to Karwei [2010-03-29 01:18:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It took way too long and I ended up printing 5 colors instead of my original plan for 4. I used mounted linoleum so I could print it on the vandercook so on the plus side I ended up with an edition of 46.

And I already sold one! Hurray! ETSY FTW!
