Description
When: May 11, 2018
Where: Own backyard, The Netherlands
It's our little backyard friend!
You know, we always forget just how tiny he is, till we see him again. Though it could be very well possible he *does* have a family and the one we saw last month was another one entirely.
The cat has been going crazy now that he's sort of discovering his killer instinct after capturing his first fly - he actually caught a mouse last month - we got the cat inside and rescued the mouse. I don't care if they're considered a pest; they're not wrecking anything, they don't come inside the house - it's a living creature just trying to survive. Plenty of people in the houses around us keep birds outside, and we have a wild bird feeder, so I can't blame them for coming to look for food here
Anyway, the first time we spotted this little guy scurrying around the backyard, he didn't mind our presence in the slightest. I was allowed to walk around him, get my camera and start taking photos. This one instance, he was closest to the house (didn't even attempt to venture inside) and I had set up here when he started springing towards the camera probably feeling courageous and walking away again. He was maybe 10 centimeters from my lens - hard to focus on so unexpectedly, but seeing him this up close, is too amazing
Species: House Mouse (Huismuis)
Latin name: Mus Musculus
Originates from pretty much all over the world.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…It is one of the most abundant species of Mus.
…Although a wild animal, the House Mouse mainly lives in association with humans.
…It has been domesticated as the pet or fancy Mouse, but also as the laboratory Mouse. As the latter, they are most commonly used in genetically engineered models for scientific research.

Thank you!
I love how close I was able to get to him - or I should say, how fearlessly he walked right up to the camera a few times (and jump back, he did know what fear was just a little). This really was a lucky shot that I didn't think would be focused, but was so happy when it was!
Great memories of spending time with him in the backyard

Thank you so much!
You know, I don't recall him being wet - he had just groomed himself extensively though. He did have a squinty eye, so he wasn't in top condition, but definitely cute.
What local saying is that?

Well, there is it: looks like wet rat (for person either rained on, sweaty or generally not dry)

Wow, that is an impressive shot! I think people tend to overreact towards mice. I've captured them and turned them loose. Cute little buggers. And don't get me started on rats. I have two rescue rats as pets. Wish I could get some good photos of them like you did here.

A friend of mine has a cat like that - he brings in mice too, as a sort of gift. Not the nicest gift we'd like to receive, of course, but it's the thought that counts and it's in their instinct.
Glad you were able to rescue this mouse!
We don't get mad, just slightly upset. He's gone from a very inept hunter to one that is definitely improving by practice. He caught one mouse, and it was still alive when we made him let go. We took the cat inside (no punishing) and let the mouse scurry off in peace.
He recently caught a smaller one, but that one didn't make it... Again, mostly upset, no punishing, but it's sort of heartbreaking you know? A little life lost
It's a good thing we're co cautious with the cat because we're afraid he'd escape the closed-in backyard (our town isn't overly friendly to cats) so he's not allowed outside on his own. There have been some near misses with wood pigeons as well, but hopefully we can prevent him from catching, but mostly killing, more critters.
Thanks
