I think of Arthur Rackham when I see this. 'Course he had elves ,goblins and fairies making their homes at the roots of old trees (from which they made butter). I have seen -and drank 2 glasses of - a soda made from birch logs !

Andrew Lang's various books were quite familiar to my mother. She related to me an anecdote about her library use in school. Her card only allowed her to take out -say- three books each time, so she, being fixated on Andrew Lang's fairy books, tried to conceal the one she wanted to read next by putting it behind the others, to prevent anybody else from borrowing it before she did.
It never worked. The librarian always carefully checked the shelves for misplaced books. Mother related this to me when her mind began slipping back into the past, and you'd feel as if YOU had those experiences yoursef. She'd recall events from her childhood clearly, and yet have trouble remembering what day it was, what month, what year. She died in 2007....
