I'm sure you were smart enough to figure that one out though!I’ve had a fluctuating relationship with Jhonen Vasquez. A friend first introduced me to his work ala Johnny The Homicidal Maniac. Oh! A comic that has cuss words and blood? Has Jhonen already fallen off, being so close to the EDGE and all? Needless to say, I wasn’t impressed with his shock value.
Then came Invader Zim, and I absolutely loved that stuff! I read that Jhonen had a lot of strife with Nickelodeon; the company wouldn’t let him express the series the way the artist wanted. Yeah, I bet he wanted every ending to have all the school children stabbed in the face. I also read that Jhonen disliked some of the fanbase he had obtained. What?! You mean a creator isn’t flattered by page after page of ZimxRapexDib pictures?! Well, I can give props to him taking a vocal stance over his acquired fantardedness. I then saw a picture of Jhonen…the dude looks like the description of what Goths look like if described by your grandparents.
Obviously, I made it my mission to dislike this putz. I finally bought the complete collection of Invader Zim, and have finally made it to listening to the commentary tracks.

He’s…actually quite likeable and funny. Despite dressing like every-anime-or-videogame-villain-with-trench-coat-and-pistols, I’d bet I would have a blast hanging out with the guy. I’ve definitely warmed up to the dude, and so feel no shame in finally tainting my site with Zim art.
About the art. I think it’s in DeviantArt law that every gallery has Invader Zim fanart in it. I took the time and scoured google images to find actual screenshots of the show—to give authentic expressions for my comic. Pretty good for a first time if I do say! And a bonus: my google search resulted in NO porn pictures! Now, if I had searched DevArt for references…

You can't really blame the slashers of ZADR though. Most of the artists so fond of slashing Zim with Dib are hormonal fangirls, not to be held responsible for their actions once they think the words Zim, Dib, and sex in the same sentence. (god this whole comment was my self-justification for my own ZADR facination. I is so ashamed of myself).

Ahh, Invader Zim! 8DD! I love that show, it's aaaawesome! Yeah, I don't...quite understand how anyone can pair Invader Zim characters together...romantically...that...that's just unsettling...DD8;; The show isn't supposed to be a romance! In the first place, the majority of the characters are still in grammar school! Secondly, it's not supposed to be taken seriously, it's just supposed to be funny...=_____=;;
It's strange to be saying/typing this...but I'm actually glad that Nickelodeon limited his artistic-freedom...xDD;; Some of the stuff that they did allow disturbed me, I can't imagine what it would be like if they let him put whatever he wanted! Although that could also just have to do with how easily I get freaked out...8D;;;
Actually, it' somewhat encouraging to see what kinds of characters fans find appealing enough to write bad slash about...xDD;; I mean...Zim has green skin, bug eyes, and no ears...and Dib has hair that looks like an antenna-mohawk and glasses that look more like thick goggles! owo;; Maybe that means that personality really is more important than looks...no, probably not...xDD;; It probably just shows how desperate and sex-obsessed fanbases can be...TT_____TT;;

And I kinda agree with you on Jhonen. His stuff is a little too extreme for my tastes too, (especially since the fact one of the characters is supposed to be satan and all that stuff) but Zim was extreme in a hilariously silly way. It made me laugh so hard, especially little Gir.

Gee, I remember Invader Zim, It came onto Nickelodeon when I was a little kid. At first I was thinkin' "okay, funny, gross! ha ha" But then the show got to be too much for me. Yeah, Grr was funny sometimes, and sometimes Dib and Zim were funny, but every little thing began to make me cringe -- the style is just perverse. Every little thing really disturbed me. From my memories of the show, I can kind of see why the fan base may be a little... lets just leave it at the ellipsis. I can see why a lot of people like the show -- the same way that people enjoy the gross humor of robot chicken and family guy and all of those other adult comedy shows -- but I don't like them; they're just too much.
It's good that the creator is actually a nice guy -- props for that, we need all the good people we can get. And h deserves the success, it's very unique and creative work. I just won't be tuning into the show.

Funny thing about that Jhonen fellow. I've had random chats with him a few times on AIM, and you're dead on on how he seems from the commentary tracks. He really IS a pretty cool guy instead of the carbon copy emo-goth he usually looks like. He seems to have gained the reputation of being a jackass amongst a lot of his so-called fans, but if you get to know him, its more that he's one of those people that is brutally honest. Fortunately, I have quite a few friends like that, so I'm used to it, and can easily get past it when talking to him.
But yeah, hes just a cool videogame loving cartoon guy like you and me. Granted, his disdain for the world and cynical output probably help my admiration for him, but he's still a neat guy nonetheless. I could always give you his SN if you felt so inclined as to speak to him. Also, this comment is because you appear to have no button for notes. For shame, Jason, for shame.

Although certainly Jhonen and I would have many whimsical discussions about how civilization’s faulty switch from an agricultural society to an industrialized one undoubtedly shorted humanity’s lifespan… I don’t know if starting an introduction with “I thought you sucked real hard until recently” would get us off on the right foot.
Personally, I think you’re allowed to be a dink if all your fans, if DevArt galleries are any indication of their personality, would run up to you and scream only Gir liners of “AH MADE IT MAHSELF!!!!!!”
