Turnings - Intro 8 || Turnings - Page 2

Page one of Turnings, a story of many changes across a diverse fantasy universe, where the only limits are one's imagination.

The story, universe, research, and writing are mine, along with many base sketches, but since I work so slowly these days around day-job and family obligations, I have commissioned my old friend Jerry Collins GeorgieGanarf   to help me bring the stories to graphic life.    I would not be getting these done without his help.  Jerry is a blast to work with, and he can use a lot more work flowing his way.  Tell him I sent you.    His contact information and price list .

Base layout sketches were mine, with pencils done by Jerry, inks by me, base colors by Jerry, then digital finishes, cleanup, and word balloons by me.  Since at the moment Jerry does not have much access to the internet, we worked "old skool", with us passing sketches and finished art back and forth through the mail.  Once I received the color pages, I scanned them, did some art-cleanup, and laid in the lettered text.

Font for the word balloons is Doujinshi , by shonenpunk
Marker, watercolor, and ink, lettering done in Paintshop Pro.
Reference:  my bendy wooden model horse.

This is so cool!! So nifty to see an equine comic, I'm really excited about this.

Thank you muchly!  That's high praise to me.    I've been so slow lately due to job, illness, and all the stuff that life throws at us sometimes.  I've got 3 more colored pages I need to touch up and set in the dialog, then they'll be ready for posting.

We used to have several people on DA doing horse/equine comics and they kind of vanished.  Since I have the entire story in pencils, I've hopes I can soldier on and get all the pages posted over time.

Well, I really look forwards to seeing it! Yeah, there were a couple of really good horse comics here once upon a time - I remember really liking Silverglass19's comic. I think a lot of comics in general fizzle because perhaps they aren't done in a sustainable way - a couple of my favourite ones which I've seen fizzle out had hugely detailed painted backgrounds, which I think is only a viable option if you have a team of artists working with you, like Kay Fedewa does (and even then... sometimes fizzling still happens, like with Off-White.) That's one of the reasons I've opted to just stick to flat colours with mine, I don't see any good reason to go super detailed unless I have help - plus I'm not much of a layout/background artist. (I don't like painting... I just like drawing!) I'm a story teller and sequential artist, so I'd rather just get 'er done and chug pages out a tiny bit faster.

Page 3 finally done and posted!  Turnings - Page 3

Silverglass's comic was lovely as was the one by Boribaby - excellent stories and art, but yes, doing a fully-painted comic takes forever if you are going it alone, which is why you will never see me giving creators a hard time about the span of time between postings.

Osamu Tezuka did 10 pages a day of whatever manga he was working on, BUT he was doing old-school B/W manga with little beyond pen-shading in the early days.  I'm not sure what his production level was for manga like Buddha, where he had some amazing details and textures page after page.  At some point he had a studio with staff, so perhaps by then he had apprentices and journeymen doing those details.

I'm unfussy about comics and manga - if the story is good, I'm happy with everything from pencil-sketches, B/W, to color, it's all good.  I'm still a big fan of the original black and while Elfquest by Wendy Pini.  I appreciate the beautiful color versions, but the B/W originals had a raw impact that was so good.

Wow, Osamu Tezuka sounds like an absolute machine, I can't imagine doing that. I can rough sketch a couple of pages or so in an evening, but that doesn't include any rendering at all. My cintiq has sped up my process a lot (which I actually sit down to work, which has been a problem lately since I've been distracted,) but I still can't match that. I like B + W too but it depends on the style, and it hasn't worked for my own work personally. Everything in Rimer's too colourful haha. I don't know how people like Zach Morrison (Paranatural -> www.paranatural.net/ ) or Ashley Cope (Unsounded -> unsoundedupdates.tumblr.com/ ) handles doing everything themselves. With mine I got inspired by Pascalle Lepas (Wilde Life -> wildelifecomic.com/ ) because she just colours her clean sketches, so that's what I do now. Saves a lot of work if you don't actually ink, but in the end it's whatever style and process best fits the story I think. I love the wide variety of art styles which come out of artists figuring out their comic creation processes!

Yep, things are going to get "exciting".  Finally got page two posted after a pair of months that were sent from the netherworld.

I love the horn of the horses.

I wanted horns that looked sturdy enough to use for self-defense.

I love that. I always thought that self defense was really the only logical reason for a unicorn's horn.

Aye, either as a good sword in dire need or perhaps the focus of power.
