Description "LoboWeek"

A Mexican Grey Wolf done in honor of LoboWeek.

What is LoboWeek?
LoboWeek is to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of the wild
release of the Mexican Wolf (canis lupus baileyi) back into
the American Southwest wilderness after over 30 years of
extinction in the wild of its home range.

This critically endangered species is living proof that we CAN save animals
from extinction. However there are currently more captive Mexican Wolves
than there are wild, the conservation goal of the Mexican Wolf was
to have atleast 100 in the wild, a number no one is even sure is sustainable
on its own, but the Mexican Wolf population has stayed between a much lower 50-75
individuals in the wild.

With the reluctancy between humans there just hasnt been enough 'priority'
to aid these beautiful animals, a keystone species, a top predator,
and an animal that holds so much history during the settlement of
North America.

That is why the LoboWeek movement with the help of social media is aimed
to get the attention of people, to raise awareness, and to prioritize these
animals that deserve to be here and need our help!

How can you help?
Just click this link: [link]
It will show you some simple things you can do to be apart of the movement.
Also take advantage of social media, and word of mouth! Educate yourself on the matter
and spread the knowledge around!
Also, any artists out there should know that art is a powerful thing, this is an opportunity
to use it for good meaning. Write and share a poem or a drawing! Show the world
how important and beautiful these animals are, and how desperate they are in need of help.

Why are Mexican Grey Wolves important?
Well here is but a few reasons.

1. Canis Lupus Baileyi (Mexican Grey Wolf) is the rarest and most genetically
distinct sub species of canis lupus (grey wolf) in North America
with their distinctly smaller size, big ears, and arguably most colorful coats
among other genetic differences.

2. Being the main wolf species native to Arizona, Texas, Mexico, and New Mexico.
The ecosystem in these area's are thrown off without this keystone species.
Remember how much the return of the Grey Wolf restored the balance in Yellowstone?
Imagine what the Mexican Wolf can do for its home range if it were allowed to flourish?

3. The Mexican Grey wolf shares a lot of American heritage and history with us.
The war on wolves was legendary in the American Southwest, in the
age of cowboys and the era where the west was something to be settled and won.

This species is too important to America's history, and future, to let slip though the cracks.

Learn more about Mexican Wolves here: [link]

And I highly recommend that in honor of LoboWeek, instead of sitting down and watching a movie with your family this week that you take one day to sit together and watch this documentary on the historic wolf "Lobo" here: [link]
Lobo is a real unsung historic figure of early America who you and your children have likely never learned about or heard of in school or ever will.
He was a famous wolf in Mexico, who could never be caught, or shot for that matter in his prime. And when he
finally was, he changed a famed wolf hunter's life, and inspired him to write a book about it
and to change the people's perspectives around him about nature, and to push to have National Parks in America.

Educate yourself and help spread awareness to others.

Done in prismacolor colored pencils, and prismacolor watercolor pencils.
And mechanical pencil 0.5.

o.o I couldnt find my paintbrush so I wound up using a frayed shoelace
that we had been using as a toy for the cats. XD
It worked better than I thought it would, but its hard without having a handle
to get tiny spaces.

That's amazing! I really like all the details you put into the background, and the fur is beautiful. It's really impressive that you did this with coloured/watercolour pencils

It was my first time being able to do this well with fur.
o.o its cray cray lol.

I was panicking trying to find it. x.x
I think I accidently packed it.
And then I was thinking about substituting it with
a wet paper towel, but figure it wouldnt work very well
and on the floor was the "cat toy" and viola. XD

^^ that means a lot thank you Sami. I really enjoy being able to use my art and knowledge to teach others spreading awareness to help animals.

You're not a poo brains! So long as you have seen it once!

You are the only one so far who has said anything about wanting to watch it.
I posted the video on facebook aswell and none of my friends of family has even taken much interest at all. Besides my best friend ofcourse.
We watched it yesterday while eating brunch. XD

I live in Southwest and for class last year I actually wrote an eight page research argumentive paper about how we should continue with reintroducing these wolves. I don't think this species deserves to go extinct again even though they have come into conflict with livestock. Great picture too!

Same here.... I also have some trouble so I rarely draw things the recent time because IΒ΄m not calm enough for that- the last drawing of mine was the raven (think about drawing another one since itΒ΄s fun for me to draw them)

Oh, I love Mexican wolves! They have beautiful fur markings!

Oh I am sorry. :/
I hope all goes well for you friend.
Another raven would be cool to see.

They are beautiful arent they?
I noticed I seem to get inspired more if I feel
like I am doing art FOR something, a 'purpose' with meaning.
And LoboWeek made a pretty big spark.
Since I like learning and spreading knowledge about wolves,
I guess I felt like: "I can be apart of this, I can help them!"
o.o and thus MOTIVATION

ArcticIceWolf In reply to mysteriouswhitewolf [2013-03-26 01:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Of course ravens are beautiful! And very smart, though few people appreciate that.... In particular IΒ΄m very interested in the symbiosis between ravens/crows and wolves!

I also spread awareness about wolves simply by drawing them, because here in my country a lot of people still have prejudices against them (talk about Red Riding Hood Complex!) And sometimes people talk to me when they see me wearing my wolf shirts.....

Thanks a lot for your nice words!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mysteriouswhitewolf In reply to ArcticIceWolf [2013-03-26 06:05:11 +0000 UTC]

Its a pretty unique relationship, between crows/ravens and wolves.

:/ That sucks, people here in Ohio are like that with coyotes.
Its really hard to talk to people about them because people think they are all rabid vicious animals that attack children and pets.

Its pretty sad. :/ We only have coyotes in north eastern America because
we killed off all the wolves so the coyotes migrated upwards to fill the ecological niche the wolf left behind...

No problem!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArcticIceWolf In reply to mysteriouswhitewolf [2013-03-26 17:41:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes I know, and itΒ΄s mentioned in a lot of books/stories (like The Sight, Fell, The Wolf Chronicles, Chronicles of Ancient Darkness)

DonΒ΄t know what some people have against coyotes- I think theyΒ΄re beautiful....

Yes, sometimes hunting can cause ecological systems to collapse- here in Germany, hunters constantly complain about overpopulation of deer and wild pigs, without realizing that itΒ΄s THEIR fault because they killed all the wolves, lynxes and bears! And when some wolves are sighted here (there are VERY small populations of them again on the border of Poland and the Czech Republic, but people arenΒ΄t used to seeing wolves any more because theyΒ΄ve been extinct for hundreds of years throughout Germany), they want them to be killed again instead of welcoming them because they would restore the ecosystem! ThatΒ΄s so unlogical....
