Fantastic- as usual. I think you're getting better at the finer detail. You know, with the style and the palette, this is instantly recognisable as one of yours to anyone who knows your work. I still think you need to see a psychiatrist, though, to sort out this being in denial that you are a real artist business.

Thanks for that. I guess that I just have a compulsion to draw and because I never really start with any idea of what I'll draw, each one completed is as much a surprise to me as anyone else I suppose. I realise that you like the images, and so do I, but I don't have a narrative of any description to support them, I sometimes wish I did. Within reason, anyone's interpretation of my pictures is equally valid and in that respect I think I should be able to say "this is what was intended" in order for the proposal that this is art and Β therefore I am an artist to be true. With reference to Scruton's essay, I don't want to babble shite to lend substance to something I don't really understand myself. Does that make sense? I'm probably stuck on a point of logic.

William Hazlitt said: "A great chessplayer is not a great man, for he leaves the world as he found it." Do you think the creative impulse is a way of proving you, specifically,Β exist by leaving something tangible and unique behind? Could this be why Scruton et al place the emphasis on originality? Everybody, literally, leaves a load of shit behind them to prove they have lived. An artist, perhaps feels this need to leave something unique behind. Perhaps it's just the urge to reproduce being canalised into object fabrication. Perhaps you only want to prove to yourself you exist and not to other people. I'm just thinking out loud here.

I won't argue, you may be right. Just uploaded three images of a picture I started today to let you see how I arrive at things. There is however nothing to say that the final image will contain all or any of the present stuff.Β Β

Is that them labelled Item1,2,3? Blimey, how thick are your canvases by the time you've finished?

namtar57 In reply to Frogstopper [2015-02-25 09:58:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, thats the progression 1,2,3. That one is on a type of board that is sort of plastic covered, the other side has my previous company's mission statement, when that changed I grabbed any old frames etc. The layers aren't very thick, majority are translucent therefore the surface isn't really that thick at the end.

Oh dear... I hope you are not harmed by glass or some such thing and that the painting is still intact!

No, its ok, its the frame that broke and not the glass. Updated the picture, it looks clearer now at least.Β
