... so.. it looks like I made another one of those coloring style comparisons, huh? x'D
hm.. doesn't this kinda look like a remake of this one? -->[link]

Well, I kinda got into "experimental mode" and wanted to try out some different coloring styles.
So when I was looking through my collection of art styles that inspire me, I noticed how some of those styles were similar in their ways of coloring.. and I picked out those that suited my style lol (that's prob' why there are only three x'D) .. and here they are!

1) THE CELL-SHADING STYLE: (on da left~)

as you obviously can see, I suck at cell shading x'D
... I just realized it when I did this little exercise here..
yeah, well when you're cell-shading, you have to be real sure of where to put your shadows --which I'm obviously not (_ _)||| ... so yeah. if you're looking for good cell-shading tutorials, you'd surely find tons of good ones here on dA ... you can check out 's tutorials, they're pretty helpful~

as to how I did this...
First of all you need to know that I worked with (the one and only) PaintTool SAI on this one.. I'm pretty sure that all of my actions would work on Photoshop too (or maybe even better) ... I'm not sure about other programs though.. ^^'
well, to keep things short.. I first filled in the base colors (on individual layers..). I think in some cases (jacket, shirt and hair) I created a gradient by blending a slightly darker and less saturated color into the base color. to emphasize the shades I guess? x)
.. this was done with a slightly modified watercolor brush.. .
then I used a normal brush tool with an -again- darker and less saturated color to do the shading.. some highlights for the hair and.. FINISHED! x'D

2) THE SEMI-SOFT SHADING STYLE: (middle)

hehe I was very comfty with this style.. xD .. this is how I've done most of my digital art so far..
I used another modified watercolor brush for the shades this time. then I tend to use the same brush as an eraser to create a fringe-like effect..
.. and that's all there is to say to this one.. ^-^

.. though I think I should paint more over my lineart.. it's still too dominant.. :/

3) THE "COLOR-BLENDING" STYLE: (right)

another style I'm uncomfortable with.. ^^'
it involves picking different colors and blending them together, giving the painting a nice, soft look... some people also use textures to make the pic look rougher ..as I did.. x'D
.. I kinda screwed up the coloring of the eyes in this one...

...ok, that's my typing limit for today..
