Description quando n'apparve una montagna, bruna per la distanza, e parvemi alta tanto quanto veduta non avea alcuna.

when there before us rose a mountain, dark because of distance, and it seemed to me the highest mountain I had ever seen.

Dante, Divina Commedia, Inferno, canto 26

Wow.

I love the composition and tones. The way that ship "points" to the mountain... the way the "black" rocks make the "grey" mountain feel really distant (and as a result really massive)... the way those clouds (and the smoke) give an ominous (almost threatening) feeling to the scene.

Very nice shot.

Btw, the first thing this picture reminded me of was "The Mysterious Island" (L'Île mystérieuse) by Jules Verne

Just magnificent!
Is the description a part from a band called gorillaz lyrics? Somehow it sound like it could be their lyrics.
If not maybe you could sell them your lyrics

actually it's "Divina Commedia" from Dante Alighieri...

but I guess gorillaz would sound more or less the same!

it's not a cloud... it's Stobloli puff of smoke.
It does that every 15 minutes or so.

The clouds and horizon seem almost unreal. It's weird how I feel close to the background and the boat at the same time--as if the picture appeared flat, but it also pops out, too. If that makes any sense?

Excellently crafted and composed. I think the piece I enjoy the most about this is the lens you must have used to achieve the apparent compression in distances. It lends a "togetherness" to all the simple elements in the composition. I love the big sky and and budding storm clouds over the distant mountain. Cool B&W!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nasht-01 In reply to Rhavethstine [2007-01-30 11:34:39 +0000 UTC]

thank you James.

I belive it was the 300D kit lens 18-55mm.

and... that is not a cloud: actually the mountain is Stromboli volcano with its smoke.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rhavethstine In reply to nasht-01 [2007-02-01 02:53:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I didn't catch that from the title/description. That makes the picture doubly as cool in my eyes.

I am somewhat surprised that you shot this with a 18-55mm. To me it looks like you used a longer lens. Maybe it's the crop that gives me that impression. Nice shot, regardless of the state of my confusion.
