i know how to apply a texture. I just suck too bad with photoshop to make a decent one.

Alli did was create a 400x400 image at 72 dpi and used the square selection tool in random spots, then filled them with different grey colors. Then I did that 11 more times to get a good amount of variety. Not to mention one could have at least 12 variations of ship before you repeat the same texture on the same spot on two ships. And even then you should be able to rotate it.

One of the main reasons I did this was to practice making a texture set for my own personal set of starships when I get around to them.
And textureing shouldn't be a big problem if the program you use uses them like mine.
None of that textureing is in the mesh. It's decals being made into bump-maps using the alpha channel to produce different size bumps really.
