This makes me want to dig up the sketches I did in grade school inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's 2010 and 2061. There seem to be eerie similarities between your work and the shark-like sea predators and sapient creatures I imagined evolving on Europa.

nemo-ramjet In reply to Osmatar [2011-11-18 18:06:28 +0000 UTC]
The Europan biosphere in those books had light and heat coming from the bottom, (vents,) and ice and darkness above... It's highly probable that animals in such a setting would look like upside-down fish, with eyes on their bottom halves.

Wait, so it's entire arm is a finger? Does it also have difficulty walking or running, since it lacks a pelvis?
π: 0 β©: 1
nemo-ramjet In reply to Dcuvek [2011-06-24 13:56:41 +0000 UTC]
A new pelvis has been forged from the bones of their thighbones. The arm is based on cartillagenous fingers, the "fingers" are muscular extensions.

AAaahhh, I like your way of thinking on designing the alien, and also putting it's common ancestor in. It's a good idea in my opinion, but say, how did you come up with the scientific name? I wonder...

Cool idea!
the concept is just awesome, and descending from aquatic creatures makes it even more interesting

somewhat like this concept would be a believable shape for the sentient aliens on the hyped movie Avatar.....(although spoiling the teen-love factor....)

Just out of curiosity, just how intelligent are these aliens? Are they like us intellectually, capable of language, religion, and technology? Or are they more like apes, with little more than simple tool-makng skills?

Yet another great design, I love the way you thought out it's evolutionary background. It also looks an awful lot like it was painted in watercolors. How did you acheive that effect digitally?
π: 0 β©: 1
nemo-ramjet In reply to DSil [2007-05-29 08:44:38 +0000 UTC]
It is in watercolors but in black and white... the digital part is for texturing and colorizing.

Wow! You really know your stuff!
I always criticize other exobiology projects for being too unrealistic with the aliens and matching them poorly with the planetary characteristics, such as putting animals with a very slim build on a high gravity planet. I noticed you had large animals on a high gravity planet but also noticed thier hydrolic muscle system.

Very unique. I especially enjoy the fact that the upper mandible articulates to chew like an alligator and the optical sense organs are on the bottom. Four eyes, two for one range of the spectrum and two for the other range. Wouldn't that make color mixing problematic? The frontal eyes seeing a slightly different perspective than the rear, making green red seem slightly off set from blue green. Or do the front eyes see red green blue and the rear eyes see different wavelengths of infra red? Or do the movement sensetive neurons exist primarily in the rear eyes while the detail sensetive neurons exist primarily in the front eyes? Or are the upper eyes adapted for being more sensitive to high light conditions and the lower eyes adapted for lower light conditions? I guess pupils would make more sense. And if vision were such an important sensation, why aren't they eyes more prominent like a chamelion's or on stalks like a crab?

Zippo4k [2006-09-05 19:48:07 +0000 UTC]
Interesting... The eyes on the lower jaw can be seen in other SF/Fantasy creatures like the Alzabo (can't remember the story's name that its from) and others (check Barlow's guides for others). Even my own personal 'universe' has creatures called ArmΓ²dens (giant, sapphire blue lizards with a sinical view of humans) with two large, crocodilian eyes protruding out from either side of their lower jaws. Eyes are the window to the soul and Ithink changing either the eyes or where the are can denature or alter our immediate perseption of something before we actually know what it's really like.

I love the overall design and the scientific appeal. But the dancing human, with his description, totally cracks me up.

thanks...this one is standing, and thus its feet are locked upright...when walking they drop down on the soles of their feet.
