Real name Penelope “Penny” Grisham
Age 27
Similar to Tech Girl, Inertia is a Neo Sapiens, the result of an experiment by Doctor Demon back in the 1990’s to create the “next step in humanity’s evolution”. He secretly injected a number of expecting mothers with a mutagen that would affect their children in specific ways. Years later, when those children were in their early teens, Doctor Demon’s henchmen attempted to abduct them so their employer could experiment on the children. The Crusaders were able to thwart Demon’s scheme, and rescued his unwitting test subjects. Each child developed a set of common abilities, as well as a power set that was uniquely his/her own. The Crusaders offered to help the teens to master and cope with their powers; many accepted at least basic tutelage in their powers, but Penny Grisham’s parents didn’t want her to have anything to do with the dangerous world of superheroics, so she returned home with no help mastering her powers.
Over the next two years, she learned about her abilities in secret through trial and error; her parents, particularly her father, were so against metahumans in general that she was afraid to let them know what she could do. This created a wedge in their family, and Penny gradually fell in with a rough crowd, which she could easily impress with just a fraction of what she could do. Penny’s exploits eventually brought her to the attention of Jared Jaxon’s criminal organization; she quickly became a super-powered enforcer for his less reputable enterprises.
In the aftermath of a gang war between Jaxon’s proxies and the Brute’s criminal organization, Inertia (as she calls herself) was apprehended by Ms. Miracle and sent to jail. In the years since, she has been in and out of prison a number of times, being drawn back into a life of crime by greed or the impulse to get revenge against the Crusaders.
Powers
Neo Sapiens physiology - Penny’s body has been augmented by Doctor Demon’s mutagen, She has superhuman strength, enabling her to lift about five tons. Her durability is also in the superhuman range; only high-caliber ammunition can actually penetrate her skin, others simply cause bruising. Her overall durability and stamina is also about ten times that of a normal adult.
Inertia Manipulation - Penny has absolute control over the inertia of any object she can perceive. She can convert potential energy instantly into kinetic energy, or transform kinetic energy into potential energy.
She can instantly cause an object in motion to stop, or make an object travel at any speed up to terminal velocity. This works similarly to telekinesis, only she has no fine control of the objects she affects. She usually uses this ability to hurl objects at her targets, or cause projectiles (such as bullets) to stop and fall to the ground
Flight - Inertia can use her inertial manipulation on her own mass, allowing her to fly. However, she has little ability to maneuver. When she does fly, she doesn’t land so much as crash.
Invulnerability - Inertia is immune to any kinetic impact as long as she can perceive the object which is about to strike her. This ability is particularly useful when she flies; she has been known to use her own body as a projectile, smashing into her opponents like a human bullet.
Inertial absorption - Inertia can store incoming kinetic energy as potential energy within her own body, then convert it back to raw strength. In effect, the harder she is hit, the stronger she gets. Inertia has to use this stored energy within a minute of impact; what she doesn’t use bleeds harmlessly away.
