Description

Been nocturnal lately, and therefore bored, lonely and a bit depressed. The whole world is asleep while I'm awake, and vice versa. Even the internet is a lonely place at 3:00 a.m.. The isolation and lack of sunlight wears you down quickly. That's why I drew this.

Dr. Robert Terwilliger works long shifts on his residency at the local hospital, often late into the night or early morning. His pregnant wife and son try to wait up for him, but they are usually sound asleep by the time he gets home. Some days he barely sees them at all. It is difficult for all of them, but the little time they DO manage to spend together is not taken for granted.

sorry to say you that, but i see a fucking perspective problem . . .Β

but otherwise, good pic Β

Nevuela In reply to Dahlshita [2014-02-27 15:34:50 +0000 UTC]

LOL what perspective problem? It is really difficult to get it right. Objects in the foreground, depending on their size, need to be somewhat large than objects in the background. A small foreground object and a large background object may look the same size. It's weird, but that's just how physics works. The dresser looks too big, but it is supposed to be in the foreground with Robert, so the size is correct in relationship to Robert's size. It doesn't look right, though, I admit.

i can explain you why that looks a little weird . . .
it's just because unintentionally, Β you have mixed vanishing point perspective and oblique projection perspective (srry, i dunno the english name of these perspective)
. . . . roughly : you have mixed 2 kind of perspectives Β . . . .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nevuela In reply to Dahlshita [2014-02-27 19:16:15 +0000 UTC]

I know what vanishing point and oblique projection are, but I do not understand what you mean about them being mixed. Both perspectives can and do exist together in art and in reality.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dahlshita In reply to Nevuela [2014-02-27 19:21:26 +0000 UTC]

in reality, you can only find vanishing point (anyway, it's what you see)
but oblique projection it's only for mathematics or drawing. but normaly, it's not correct to mix the both, you chose this one or the other, but not the both in the same time

Also, there is no vanishing point in my picture. Where do you see a vanishing point?

there is a vanishing point and that explain why Judith and Bob are fucking little compared to Robert . . .
sta.sh/01fjhmqrb9tm
you said that you didn't use vanishing point, but if you didn't used it, never Judith and Bob would have looked so small . . .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nevuela In reply to Dahlshita [2014-03-01 15:50:44 +0000 UTC]

They are further away because they are in the background, but I still did not use a vanishing point. The top of Robert's head does not count as one of the converging lines. A vanishing point must be visible in the picture itself. Even if the entire room was shown, there would still be no vanishing point, because no lines would converge to create one. The worst part is that the bed is drawn too low, as well as too small. I looked online for images that I could copy for the right angles, but I didn't find any that I liked that would show everything I wanted to show, so I had to guess at the angles. It was very hard and it is why I don't draw unusual angles very often. Something always turns out wrong.

"They are further away because they are in the background"
yeah, but if you would have had used the oblique projection to draw them, normaly, they wouldn't have been so small.

" but I still did not use a vanishing point."
. . . you have used Β vanishing point without knowing it . . .

personnly, when i draw my pics, even if i don't put any lines or point to help me, but at the end, in almost all my pics, i'm able to show you where is/are the Β  vanishing point(s)

and yes, the top of Robert's head can be used as a converging line . . .

to explain you what i want say, i have made this (bad) gif :
sta.sh/01kilghubzwf

first i Β drew, and it's only at the end that i have added the line to explain you. you don't have necessarily to draw any points to get vanishing point perspective Β (it's very rare that i put points/line it before drawing . . ) . . .

Nevuela In reply to Dahlshita [2014-03-01 17:08:13 +0000 UTC]

That GIF makes it all clear to me now, but it is still very difficult for me to keep angles consistent. I tried really hard on this picture, you know. I don't know what you expect me to do.

If you think this picture is bad, take a look at this one, it's much worse >_<

i know that for you, it's not as easier as me to draw certain perspectives . . .
you just have to be used . . . don't worry

hmmm .. . . about your painting ? the only thing who disturbing me it's the roof lines. . . Β but almost all of your pic looks good

Nevuela In reply to Dahlshita [2014-02-27 22:20:28 +0000 UTC]

That doesn't make any sense. I see many pictures with both perspectives. Vanishing point is simply where lines converge to create a distant focal point where things appear to vanish. Oblique projection would still exist with that, as shown in this image: content.artofmanliness.com/upl…

The vanishing point is in the center, and oblique projection is demonstrated by the rectangular boxes. Vanishing point perspective AND oblique projection perspective DO exist at the same time.

Aw, look at Bob all you see is his hair ugh imagine how annoying it would be sleeping with adult Bob with that monstrous hair

Robert looks so cute, glad that his little man has been keeping his mum company.

I bet he can't wait to get in bed and cuddle up to Bob and Judith lol.Β

Unless he gently picks Bob up and takes him back to his room

As long as I'm not the one doing the spooning, it may not be so bad. Plus I bet his hair would make a great pillow.

Nah, he'll let Bob stay tonight. He hasn't seen any of his family much lately, so he'll take all the quality time he can get, even if they're all sleeping. ^_^

r-williams In reply to Nevuela [2014-02-24 22:50:03 +0000 UTC]

No kidding! you'd get lost in that hair. He could tie it up in a bun lol

I imagine it would, not sure Bob would enjoy it

Maybe a chest pillow be better

He might have wanted some alone time, unless he's too knackered to do anything

Hope he doesn't snore like a Homer Simpson and wake them up anyway

I bet when Cecil is born him and Bob will fight who gets to sleep with mum and dad LOL they'd definitely choose Cecil since Bob needs to be a big boy now.Β

Is Robert getting up for work? Or dressing to get in bed? You don't specify, but to me it looks like he is getting out of the warm bed to go to work. And I love how the entire picture is dimmed appropriately with the time of the hour (either early morning or super late night). It gives out that cozy bed feeling, but also sad because he's leaving his family (yes yes, temporarily, but still!) to get ready for the day. It also looks like Robert just wants to get back into the warm bed and spend the rest of the day with his wife and son ^_^Β

Nevuela In reply to LSimpsonJazzgirl [2014-02-27 15:42:37 +0000 UTC]

I meant for him to be returning home from work, as evidenced by his shoes and socks strewn about the floor (although I probably should have added his pants too, lol). Plus the fact that Bob is in bed with Judith, implying they both got lonely without Daddy so they decided to sleep together. ^_^ Technically it could be early morning OR late night, and either one would be equally significant to the theme of the picture. Whether he's just getting home or is about to go to work, there is that feeling of missing his family and being glad for the time he does get to spend with them. ^_^

LOL I totally missed the shoes and socks!! Probably because my own room is rather messy nonetheless I do love that I'm-finally-back-at-home-with-my-family-while-it's-cold-outside feeling you've captured here. I love winters for that reason. It just feels a lot warmer to come home to your family when it's cold out ^^ I know you don't specify winter or the temperature (not even sure if such an idea would've occured at all), but it reminds me of it
