A closeup of my She-Anophelii design. Another design from the Bas-Lag books by China Mieville. This one took a variety of permutations since the concept is a relatively simple one, but the execution just wasn't working. With this one I feel like I'm finally getting there. Man, they're gross. Scary! Her hair here is creeping me out the most, to be honest. Oh man, that whole island segment was one of the most riveting parts of the book. I was eating while reading it, and I just about lost my lunch. (Oh, how I love the way Mieville makes us squirm ahaha)

Faaaaabulous. I also found the she-anophelii inexplicably artistically inspiring. I imagined their... uhh... blood-sucking anatomical barf-bits to be more coiled or jointed, though, not so much like spears. Although this drawing really does a far better job than mine at getting across the feeling of when Bellis said that it didn't look like they physically could store such parts inside their bodies, they're that weirdly-shaped...

This is one of the hardest species to visualize. The tragic nature of their lives and their slavery to hunger shows well in those haunted eyes.

That scene with the pig in the Scar was surreal. I can only imagine what the Malarial Queendom must have been like.

That's excellent. Funny thing is I just read that section again today. I might mention though, the book says they have no teeth, but hey, that kind of thing can be in the air.
