Description Continuing on with my experiment- beginning paintings without prior planning, here is The Temple of Forbidden Knowledge - acrylic 10x14". Again I started with a neutral grey surface and made sweeping marks with a darker tone, then pushed, pulled and wrangled it into something recognizable. As always, I'd be interested to hear what you make of it- if you see a story here what would it be?

Once it started looking like some sort of architecture, I started refining the structure- yet it had this strange wide angled or even fisheye look to it. That reminded me a bit of the famous Lovecraftian 'non-euclidean' geometry (almost like M.C Escher art come to life), suggesting to me that this wasn't your run-of-the-mill place. I had previously been listening to a podcast about secret societies and supposed alien influences, this bizarre place I was painting seemed like a perfect place for the two groups to interface. Yet, as we see, something has happened to either or both of the factions, and nature has taken over once again.

I see a psychedelic version of The Legend of Zelda as its story. A sequel to Twilight Princess? XD I actually have begun a sequel to that game. If you are interested, I can send you a link. Anyway, this is actually REALLY AWESOME and I absolutely LOVE the idea. Only just noticed the stairs at the bottom while writing this. Now I wonder what you could draw for a little indie game called Cave Story... (I have something for that too, one of the only two pictures I have posted in fact XD)

My exposure to Zelda is a bit limited- I did play Ocarina of time on the GameBoy color, but that's about it. I like that you see it as psychedelic, as I wanted a lot of energy and motion to work against the stillness.

Actually, Ocarina of Time is Nintendo 64. What you are thinking of is Oracle of Ages, which I believe was actually the first Legend of Zelda game I played, as well as the first I owned.

How did I miss this when you put it up? Those faces are terrifying! Gives a feeling of the ruins of some sort of quasi-human race. Makes me think of the so-called "forbidden histories" and aliens in folklore.

Myself, I watch 100 or so people, and that requires me to view several pages of thumbs several times a day- so I think it's easy to overlook stuff here. Sometimes I click the wrong tiny part of a thumb and then *poof* it's irretrievable.

We might be thinking of the same forbidden history, I was listening to a podcast suggesting some strange interbreeding going on way back in our distant past- suggesting those now in power have this mixed heritage.

thanks!

I watch a lot of people too, and I'm part of a lot of groups so group stuff usually floods my inbox. I actually unchecked the option to watch group submissions for a lot of them, it was getting out of hand. I hate seeing something awesome in a thumbnail and accidentally deleting it!

I know exactly what you're talking about--I was (more or less forcibly) immersed in the whole conspiracy scene a few years ago. Long story. I think a lot theories make sense, but a lot of it is utter crackpot ;D

Most excellent, Sir! I appreciate it even more because it's done in a traditional medium.

Thank you! I've dabbled a bit into the digital medium, but something keeps pulling me back to the traditional. Computers are amazing design tools and there are some really breathtaking digital 'paintings' being made, but I guess I much prefer the aesthetic of the older traditions and the tactile experience.

Haven't gotten very good at it yet. Still thinking too much, it's like meditation. It's takes practice, but you seem pretty good at it.

I know what you mean, and meditation is a good analogy.... am I getting too much in the way of the flow of the process, and where is the flow coming from?

good job my friend. you've got a great handle on lighting and this definitely has a sense that its being viewed through some strange lens without looking "wrong".

if you're familiar with some of sam raimi's early work, like on the second evil dead movie, he created some cinematic moments that this painting immediately reminded me of.

This is amazing. The shading and highlights are superb, and the object really look 3D - like you could reach out and touch them. I like the angle at which everything in the painting is viewed and the amount of detail put into it. I have to say you did a very good job on this

Thank you for your kind comments, and I appreciate your explaining why you like it as well (not everyone does that). I am not responsible for any of the consequences which may result from touching the subjects of the painting!

I like it.

Drawing without a plan has always been really fulfilling to me, too. It's keeps you interested in it and feels way more industrious.

nightserpent In reply to Roberts-The-Vile [2012-03-15 21:44:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'm often reluctant to do too much planning, as much as that may end up causing problems later on in the process ("whoops, didn't leave enough room for something important", etc), because it takes a lot of the surprise out of it. Doing the finish ends up feeling like a redundant chore, and without the excitement that comes from spontaneity it can be a lot less fun for me-and that lack of fun can sometimes show through in the end result.

What caught my eye was the altar or tomb in the center of your painting and the stone carving of the face in the bottom left, very cool!

Thanks, Sch1itzie! I imagine there's a book on the altar... and it's not easy to get to it. What else would one expect with forbidden knowledge?

Demeter-Art [2012-03-15 20:45:50 +0000 UTC]

according to your description it sounds like automatic painting, an instinctive/impulsive approach to painting a picture. as such it tells a story of your subconscious. personally i think it is an interesting experiment and definitely a good painting

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nightserpent In reply to Demeter-Art [2012-03-15 21:39:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks you! That's very much how I feel about the approach as well- a stream of consciousness. I've been illustrating since about '93 and though I try to get my voice into the assignments there still is often a lot of compromise and that at times can get a bit frustrating. I wondered what my art might look like without anyone else involved, but the idea got to be a little overwhelming (where to start, where to stop?), so I decided to just paint and see what happens. I hope through enough of these that some sort of pattern evolves, that ought to help guide me in my search.
