Description To start drawing G4 ponies, I first had to figure out measurements so I could draw them correctly and consistently. I found some patterns of where parts are placed that make the job much easier.

Since these measurements helped me, I thought I would share.

Thanks this will definitely help me. my problem is I have drawn realistic art all my life, so when i started to draw mlp characters they turned out way too detailed...like real horses lol

I imagine that would be hard. I was never a great artist, but I bet the subtle curvature will be a challenge just like it was for me.

Hm. It took me a bit to get this, but now that I get what's going on this is pretty useful. Thanks for sharing! I'll definitely put this to use the next time I draw FiM style. c:

I'm working on drawing my very first pony! [this is quite a feat for me, I almost zero drawing skills...just a little, the pony looks slightly like a rino trying to be a pony] its a work in progress.

HA!I think I got it! its not perfect and it took a lot of erasing and redrawing, but its a recognizable pony head! I'm actually quite proud of my self!

Just draw circles and maybe a few lines as guides. Once you've done that, it's easier to tell where to put the ears, how big to make the eyes etc. For example, the eyes are a little below the center of the circle and are a little taller than half the circle.

Note that this was just a guide to get me started in learning the style. I don't do anything like this now

This sheds some light on me, I gotta remember this.

I still find it difficult to draw the curve of the muzzle though.

It is hard, but practice helps a lot. Just trace for a while if that helps or at least always keep a reference picture handy (a screenshot from the actual show) that's similar to your pose

JulesBlewitt [2011-12-17 23:51:10 +0000 UTC]

woah, I just realized, but each pony has a different shaped nose!
(either that or the animators aren't consistent on that part .)

Nimaru In reply to JulesBlewitt [2011-12-18 17:26:43 +0000 UTC]

The mane six have the same nose. It was probably the angles or the particular screenshot that I took that shows it different. As time goes on, they're doing more and more body types, but originally, it was just the one "model" for the most part.
