Yes, they are often portrayed as completely serpentine with no human characteristics. I don't know why but I like the human/snake combination better.
Thanks, though! I don't actually play Elder Scrolls so I'm going to have to take your word for it, lol.

Well nagas aren't Greek, they're Indian, so that's why they're not always half human. When they are half human, they usually have multiple arms. The Greeks had lamias, which were pretty much the literal human from the waist up, snake from the waist down with ram horns kind of creatures.

Well yes, there are different variations throughout southeast Asia, but I'm relatively sure it started with Hinduism in India. But I could very well be wrong.

I got curious and googled it, and apparently Hinduism is about a thousand years older XD
But yeah, I agree that I just like the legends for the legends. I just think it's interesting to know where they came from/how they came about.

If you're serious about it, you can send me a message, or even better an IM, and I can help you decide on a species, learn how to take care of it, and tell you what you need.

They are. And I want to breed them as a career, so the more I talk about them, the more I remember things off the top of my head, and the better it is for me and for them in the long run.

For me it was owning something bigger than a garter snake, lol. Those guys are cool, but they just don't compare to ball pythons and whatnot.

What? Where the hell are you meeting snakes? Many species of pythons are very docile. Like ball pythons. They're beginner snakes for a reason. Burmese pythons are considered puppy dogs as far as large snakes go (btw, the fact that they're albino has no affect on their temperament, and it's not a separate species or anything). Children's pythons and diamond pythons and carpet pythons can all make very calm pets, but they have very hard/fast feeding responses so they look a little scary. The only pythons I can think of that are known for poor attitudes are blood pythons, African rock pythons, and sometimes green tree pythons, and even that's only some of them. There are just as many aggressive/overeager species of boa (boa constrictor, emerald tree boa, Argentine boa)and colubrid (bullsnake, rat snake, some kingsnakes and milk snakes)as there are pythons.
There is no species that is automatically nasty just because it's that species. Any species can be puppy-dog tame with the right amount of gentle handling.

Really? O.O I remember going to this Zoo when I was younger and the tour guide said that the bigger snakes are, the more territorial and aggressive they were O_o and I really believed him because every large he showed me would hiss and bite while every other smaller snake that was not venomous would be gentle. Thanks for that massive correction XD

Yeah, that's complete and utter bullshit. Maybe in the wild, but in captivity, Burms especially are generally sweethearts. That's why they're so common in photos and kid's shows and everything. I hate to think it but the guide may have been fearmongering to gather attention. Which means they shouldn't be a tour guide...but I digress. Here:

Ball python, definitely. Most reptile keepers will recommend ball pythons, corn snakes, and California kingsnakes as "beginner" snakes because they are all docile, easy to care for, and forgiving of mistakes. However, I think ball pythons are the best because, while they are the largest of those snakes (only about 3 - 5 ft long but they're thick, they're also the easiest to handle. Corns and kings are not aggressive by any means, but they are very fast and energetic, and that can be overwhelming for someone who doesn't have much experience handling snakes. Corns and kings also are better escape artists than balls.
Whatever you decide to go with first, make sure you're comfortable with a snake that size before you go with a larger snake like a carpet python, and definitely wait a few years before getting one of "The Big 9": Burmese python, reticulated python, northern and southern African rock python, green anaconda, yellow anaconda, the amethystine python, and the boa constrictor (although the boa is pretty easy, honestly. I have one). If you absolutely insist on something bigger than a ball, you can go for one of the larger snakes, but make sure you do A LOT of research and try finding local breeders, zoos, and rescues that can help you learn how to handle a 16 ft, 200 lb snake XD
But yeah. I definitely say the ball python is the best beginner snake.

Sure thing. If you need anything else, just ask. I can help with tips for caring for them, where to get one, how to warm people up to them, etc. And if I don't know the answer, chances are I can link you to the place to find it.

What should a feed a ball? Pinkies, Mice, Rats? or do I need to aim for something larger?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
NovaLuna In reply to XorexTheDragon [2012-01-26 17:45:59 +0000 UTC]
It depends on the size. Babies can be fed on pinkies, rat pups, or fuzzy mice. By the time it's full-grown, you'll be giving it one medium adult rat once a week. The food should be just as wide as the widest part of the snake's body.
Rats are more nutritious, but it's hard to find them in pet stores under a certain size. It won't do any real harm to keep the snake on mice until you get to that size though, so don't worry about it too much.
Make sure you get frozen rodents and thaw them out, since live ones can fight back and hurt the snake.

.....Insurance? Uhm, if you mean on the snake itself, I don't even think that exists. If you mean like an insurance policy on your house/apartment because you own the snake, I have no idea, it would depend on your landlord.
Weight loss, scars, squeaking noises, and lethargy are all signs of illness or injury, but there are LOTS of others. Just do your research beforehand and you should be okay.
