Description
Well, I'm glad I got this done in time.
October's Alien of the Month: Ispeians
This species was chosen to answer a question posed by last month.
She said: "that does make me wonder if Asha has a similar offshoot of the Terrian people Or if ultimately the sleeshaw are the genetic destiny of ALL Terrians."
While Asha isn't the direct ancestor of the Isepians, she is one of a few who can still be genetically tied to them. They are descended from florians, who were made with the genetic material of individuals from her clan.
There are a whole set of species descended from or made with Terrian genetic material, classified as Terresian and they include: Florian, Gab'rien, Slee-sha, and Isepian.
Species Information:
Isepian (Isepias Terresian)
Homeworld: Isep
Isep is the warmest and smallest inhabited planet in the Teth-Sim system. It is closest to the red star Tethla. It's all reddish sand and stone. It's hot during the day and cold at night. What water there is to be found is underground in an elaborate system of caves and tunnels ... some natural, some carved over time. There is one prominent stone "mountain" near the equator which has been carved out to be the Isepian capitol city. It holds the record for the largest singular structure outside of mechanid space and one of the largest "rocks" in the galaxy.
Due to the nature of Isepian society, it is also considered the largest singular military base in the galaxy.
Size: A little smaller than human.
Though most Isepians are roughly the same size, males can reach up to 5'8" (if he's *really* lucky), and females average around 4'10".
Intelligence: Roughly human equivalent.
They are better at some things and worse at others. But, in general, it's pretty even.
Language: Hassan
Lifespan: Varied
Some live to be in their 80's and several have lived well into their 8,000's. No one, not even the Isepians themselves, know why this happens and what determines the life span of any given individual. They have learned to see it with what, for them, would be called a philosophical point of view. "When our time is up, it's up. No more to it than that. What's important is what we do with the time we're given."
Psychology and Culture.:
Isepian society is militaristic from beginning to end. One is born into the system and dies as a part of the system. There is no retiring. Only reassignment. This gives the entire race a sense of cohesion and camaraderie. It also discourages favoritism and social classes. What a singular Isepian has is earned through personal merit and hard work. The child of a Haza (high general) starts off as a grunt just like everyone else. There are no heirs in Isepian culture and favoritism is a social taboo.
Promotion within society comes with age and hard work. It is an unspoken social rule on Isep that says "it's never good enough, if I can do this, then I can do better". They challenge themselves to excel in everything they do. They also encourage one another. Someone who is having a difficult time can, without pause, go to the others in their unit for help and support. What is good for one is good for the rest. And while they may be very harsh on themselves, they are very patient with one another. After all, helping others to succeed looks good when it comes time to award promotions.
The survive best in an environment with rules and schedules. This is not to say that they are psychologically dependent upon these things, it just makes them more comfortable. It's the reason so few of them are seen in residence off of Isep itself. Other places are fun for them to visit, but never for very long.
They aren't known for their sunny disposition or for being particularly outgoing. But what they are, to the last of them, is polite. Sometimes a bit too polite. They will be fair, kind, and honest, but you'd be hard-pressed to find one in a social club anywhere outside of Isep.
Physiology:
Isepians, like the Florians before them, are photosynthetic. They require very little water, concentrated mineral tablets (with special flavors for the kids) three times a year, and lots of sun. (They've been caught eating something else. It appeared to be biological in nature, like a kind of meat. They don't talk about what it is and the rest of the galaxy has stopped asking. What we *do* know is that it's NOT other Isepians. We had to check!) Their restaurants usually consist of seats with intricate overhead lighting or a large sun roof.
They are best described as "solid". They tend to be a little heavy for their size due to their chemical components, and 99.98% of them are in peak physical condition (there's that military society again). Any bulk on them is usually muscle (it's hard to make fat without what we know as "food"). One man (either brave or stupid, sporting a broken jaw) said: Hitting an Isepian feels like hitting a tree trunk. They do not swim ... they sink.
Their dark colors help them to absorb light.
Of all the Terriesian species, the Isepians are closest to being mammals ... but not quite. Their reproductive process looks mammalian from a distance, but is biologically closer to a plant growing fruit internally. Their gestation period is about three months, and mothers don't produce milk, but a mineral oil-like substance. We don't know as much about the process as we'd like, but the intensely private Isepians don't consider it a matter for other species to study. They don't understand how it can be relevant to anyone else.
Other:
They are not just soldiers, they are also artists. Each Isepian chooses and art to study when they are very young and practice it their whole lives. These are usually craft rather than preforming arts. Any person neglecting their art cannot be promoted. It's considered as vital as military life. Most popular is glass-blowing (on a planet of sand ... it makes some sense). The more popular the art, the more competitive it tends to be.
Their art, should the choose to sell it (and some don't as it's considered an expression of their souls), fetches the highest art prices in the galaxy. It's so rare to find off Isep, and the artists there are so respected that the collection of Isepian art is only for the very rich. A collector is also likely to see the price adjusted for the artist's military rank as well.
They have been known to give away their art to people they respect more than to sell it. It's a very meaningful gift, and to refuse it is the greatest insult. The honor is never "too great", the artist is the judge of that.
The most "expensive" art from Isep are weavings by their high-ruler Sha-Eris. he has been working at his craft for thousands of years, and his work (all done by hand) is unmatched except by the most advanced machinery ... and even then, the machine work is said to be missing "the soul". He does not sell his work ever. It is only gifted or traded. If a price were to be put on it, a 1"x 22" ribbon like the one gifted to Abraham Planestrider's baby daughter would sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The woman in the picture is Daphenn Malak, 8th Haza and spy master. She's one of the six oldest of her kind, dating back to the Soul Syphon Wars. She's shown wearing the uniform created just for the Galactic Olympics, to be held in about two earth years. She will be competing in craft arts and long-distance running.
Daphenn is considered the highest ranked glass-blower on Isep. She's been working on a suspended scale model of the galaxy for the last 400 years. Right now it's about 80% finished and is housed in a large arena formerly dedicated to vehicular maneuvers, where people can come and watch her work.
She is a prime example of female Isepian beauty and is the second most well known woman of her species outside of Isep. She is second only to A.W.O.L. who is a very popular pop star.
