Description My (botched) traditional watercolor brought into Corel Painter and digitally enhanced.

Last foray into traditional work--damn w/c paper's cost has gone through the roof and I ruin too many sheets... Painter's faaaar cheaper!

Wonderful piece. Color you use almost conflicts with the softness in her expression... that duality is a woman. Is her hair digital?

Yes, the hair texture was applied using Corel Painter. I created a separate layer and using black I applied a "brush". The brush is in the category "F-X", variant "Furry Brush". I selectively twirled different areas of the "hair" thus obtained with another brush, "Distorto". Later I applied Effect->Lighting from a selected angle.

Ohhhh... Thank you for describing your technique... I really don't understand it though. I am old and use paint brushes. When I looked at her hair close up, I was thinking about how long that would take me to do with paint!!! Either way, what you have created is a work of beauty!

Wow.. I really like this. How did you get that hair texture, it totally makes the painting more interesting 'cause it looks like real hair!

Hi! ..glad you liked it. The hair texture was applied using Corel Painter 11. I created a separate layer and using black I applied a "brush". The brush is in the category "F-X", variant "Furry Brush". I selectively twirled different areas of the "hair" thus obtained with another brush, Distorto. Later I applied: Effect->Lighting from a selected angle... and voila!

This is really.. breathtaking. Even though you say it's botched. This is incredibly beautiful. I love the texture in her hair and the colors are really outstanding. They're the colors of a beautiful culture. <3

wow. thats a good one! but i think the hair effect doesn't really fit in watercolor painting^^

Ochichi In reply to ubervlad [2009-07-24 15:41:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment. Yes, the hair was added digitally after I scanned the watercolor in. The hair on the original came out lacking texture and hightlighs.

I love the textures. They look awesome
The thing that really gets me, though, is the colors. They really look amazing. You're great with choosing the right colors for the right places. And everything fits together so well. Amazing job!

Ochichi In reply to MahouKiyoraka [2008-11-30 21:16:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, thank you dear. Okay, you do traditional work and that makes it a little difficult to correct errors, especially with colors... Digital work is far more forgiving. You don't like a color and once you've learned the technique, you simply changed it or adjust it. As to the texture, that's principally why I've switched to doing my doodling in the computer, with Painter and the Wacom. Texture is only limited to your imagination. For example, the hair on the work was applied using a "fiber" brush. After that I kinked up the fibers with a distort brush and then applied lighting effect from a certain angle to give the shadow and highlights. (I did not like the original hair I painted 'cause it looked too flat and with watercolors you just can't change from dark to light--that I know of) As to the colors, I set up my palettes beforehand so I can control the overall feel. It's really quite simple once you get the hang of it. Thanks again for commenting and favoring.

I'd love to try digital art, but I have no way to start x.x
You're very welcome though!

Ochichi In reply to MahouKiyoraka [2008-11-30 21:26:09 +0000 UTC]

Okay, but you are using a computer...Adobe allows you a 30-day trial of it's Photoshop product and same thing with Corel Painter. What have you got to lose? You could take all that line art stuff you've done, like the latest piece, the Black Butler, and really go to town with it, adding colors and textures to your heart's content.
G'luck again!
