I love the piece, but I must say it looks as though whoevers hand that is they may suffer arthritis in the little finger and the tips of the other fingers.

4 years Biophysics undergrad and 3 years Biophysics post grad. Ok quick X-ray lesson, essential X-rays will pass through soft tissue and be blocked by bone the thinner the bone the less x-rays it will block. ok put your hand on a photographic plate and shine x-rays on it the more x-rays that hit the plate the more it darkens so where there is just soft tissue we get dark areas and where there is dense bone we get white areas. The small bones at the end of the fingers should block less x-rays than further down the finger but those finger tips aren't really blocking much of the x-rays at all.
Oh the artistic Beauty of Science.

I love X-rays as well but I went down the route of Protein Diffraction patterns, well worth looking up, you will find some amazing images.

I would advise checking out your local library first, the textbooks are hellish expensive. Look for a pair of Authours called Branden and Tooze or for any texts by Dorthy Hodgkinson or Rosalind Franklin or William Bragg. William Bragg might be the best one to check out first.
