I really like the background^^ It's very soft and simple, and pretty damn good for your first one XD The only thing I recommend is showing more depth within the forest.

Oh gawd, he has the absolute most precious dragon-face I've ever seen.
For the background, I'd say you're definitely on the right track. Just try using darker shadows to help contrast it a bit more, and you should be good to go.
