Description As short set of photographs of trees and woodland found near the village of Auchencairn, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

This set of three trees, found within woodland in the Ken Dee Marshes near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, was captured with a six shot vertical pano, and composited using Lightroom's PhotoMerge. I've chosen a monochrome rendition as the light was poor and there was little contrast. Using Nik Silver Efex Pro, the image has been given a Kodak 125 film emulation.

I would call this the Three Sisters, very...what the word, remember my trees "Something Wicked this Way Comes"...yeah.

Indeed, Sheri. On a cold grey day, this whole area is a bit spooky, but I've never before managed to see these tress just like this.

Many Thanks

David

That's smart to use black and white to your advantage during dulled lighting. It definitely helps in this case, my eyes were immediately drawn to the trunks all the way up.
I think with colour the scene would have been too busy to focus on a single element.
Very nicely composed David, another great addition to your gallery

Thank you kindly for the comments, Rachel. Yes, when contrast is low, you need to consider and use monochrome. I was pleased with the way the vertical pano turned out. The trees were too high to get into one frame even working at 24 mm focal length. I couldn't move back because trees and bushes behind me would have obscured the view. So, pano play! Using the Silver Efex Pro software and the film emulation brought out some detail in the sky.

Cheers

David

It does look a bit desolated, Wiebe, but this is rather healthy woodland. Just that almost all the leaves have been shed over Autumn.

Many thanks.

Wow, wondrous!!!!! Β  I've never seen anything quiteΒ like this one before. ! I adore the way their branches twist and turn... After having just read that link you sent me on mythology; it makes me think of Medusa and her sisters.Β Β  Great capture andΒ atmosphere, David! !!

This turned out to be better than expected, Linda. It is a six shot vertical pano and the software has worked its magic. The focal length of the lens is 24 mm, that is a wide angle. You cannot get all of the trees from top to bottom in even with that focal length. So, make a virtue out of necessity and shoot pano shots from bottom to top. The software automatically corrects for distortion and so the trees do not look as if they are going to topple over. In simple terms, you could not take this image as a single shot.

As to Medusa, yes, you can imagine those boughs writhing about like the snakes in her hair.

Cheers

Just a bit weird - must have happened by chance many years ago, this being "cultivated" woodland. They do appear to be three separate trees rather than different trunks of the same tree, but who knows.

Many Thanks, Steven.
