Along with that, it's also the mask that the hactivist group, Anonymous uses to characterize themselves.

It's a Guy Fawkes mask [link] . You may have recognized it from the movie/comics V for Vendetta [link] (film).

Give man a mask and he will speak from the heart. However, the heart is sometimes stupid. A la sigmund freud, the superego is what man lacks most in; often id isn't very pretty to look at by itself. Or fun for everyone else rather.

Sooo not what Oscar Wilde meant by this. He was speaking about how anonymity allows cowards to say what they think without fear of repercussions. Which in a sense, applies directly to the losers in Guy Fawkes masks, but Wilde was smart enough that he would have seen through those trashy plastic masks to the popular sentiment within, to the intoxicating self-satisfaction that fuels them. He would have seen it as devoid of true awareness or wisdom.
Wear your oh-so-daring masks if you want to, kids; prematurely congratulate yourself on how original you think you are. Just don't justify your games by co-opting words you don't understand.

Indeed.
But now the face has come to rest on that of Anonymous, and of the people.
We are more than that fifth prison cell, more than just some vendetta of vengeance.
We have learned that to aquire peace there must be peace.
We must not topple greed and corruption via violence.
We must topple greed and corruption via dedication to being governed by proven fact, to free fact based education that grows critical thinking skills, to moral conduct, to universal brotherhood, to equality...
And to the peacfull actions in the name of acquiring and defending these things.
5 is Vengeance, and vengeance is destruction.
Peace is not destruction.
Not Anonymous or the people protesting against corporate capitalism are using violence.
The protestors use the mere might of the combined voices of the crowd.
Anonymous, that of education.
When education and the masses are one, we will have peace.
But the current war on education, science, womens' rights, and the misguided belief that any form of anarchism will help the weak masses aginst the powerful few is working to keep us forever in the clutches of the greedy by means of self perpetuating ignorance and misconceptions.
V died a terrorist anarchist.
Guy Fawkes died a terrorist anarchist.
But hiding one's face gives protesters anonymity, it gives them unity, and it gives them a chance to be heard.
But their is only one face, and it's that of violence.
If WE are to succeed against greed, ignorance, and misconceptions the face we ware must bare is that of peace, unity, and education.
The face of Fawkes has changed, because a new person has brought a new voice.
Do you understand?

there was NO indication that this artwork referred to Anonymous and not V for Vendetta. I had no clue that Guy Fawkes or V--who used his mask as a means for anonymous violence--is now the poster child for the organization Anonymous (if it's actually true) and while it is always nice to learn something new, I desired neither a sermon nor an essay. Thank you for sharing your opinion, but might I request that next time you keep it short and less preachy.

The blatant condescension in your comment stunned me. I wonder, though, if you expect me to accept your suggestions in the face of such insult and arrogance, or if you simply desired to be snotty and holier-than-thou. I'm kinda thinking it's the latter. In which case I strive to avoid talking to trolls. Bye.

I think the qoute is confusing. This sounds like someone is only becomming oneself when wearing a mask. But thats not oneself, its wearing a mask!
My interpretation is that people are cowardly if others can see their faces while they talk about what they really think and everything thats critical and what not.
And because people dont dare, since they lack the guts to do it, they need a mask.
Is this interpretation right?

Kitty882 In reply to DunkleMaterie [2013-03-26 02:03:11 +0000 UTC]
Well what I figured out the interpretation is that when talking about yourself you sometimes you only say the good traits but never really the bad ones. Like I'm a little over sarcastic but if I was talking to you face to face I wouldn't say that. A DA account is like a mask you don't know who I am so I can say things I wouldn't say to someone face to face.

DunkleMaterie In reply to Kitty882 [2013-03-26 04:20:02 +0000 UTC]
Well in the end its not cowardly to hide your identity behind a mask.
Its sad that people dont appreciate someone honestly telling them what they think and want to harm them for it.
I guess mask's became quite convenient from this point of view.

Mostly because they fear that the world will shun them. But if they don a mask, then the redicule and blame is placed upon the mask, not the face.
