it is mermay once again which means that once again it is time for me to draw horrifying sea-dwelling monsters! I like to base most of the mermaids I draw off of real-life spooky sea creatures, so when one of my followers on twitter suggested the black dragonfish i was like Yes™. I highly recommend looking up videos of the black dragonfish, bc it's bioluminescent and when it lights up it glows almost completely blue. Unlike the angler fish, who only uses its weird fleshy flashlight as a lure (bc apparently angler fish and many other bioluminescent fish can't see their own light?? waow) the dragonfish uses it as a way to hunt for food in the void of the deep sea. Literal flashlight.
Also despite looking like it could rip ur head from ur body, dragonfish are only 14 cm long. Creepy babies. So, knowing that, I like to imagine that this mermaid would be tiny. Like the length of a garden snake. Horror that you can hold in ur hand.
