Ive never tried this technique (tell a lie, i may have when i was little) so its great to see new types of work on the DA! Especially when its turned out so well!! All your little scrapings reflect those exact same carving strokes made by the sculpture who made the sculptures. That to me is very evocative. Good job!

Thank you! I didn't think about it at the time, but yeah, there is surprisingly little scratchboard here. I'm glad you stumbled across this and enjoyed it.

Awe inspiring. I don't know any other words to describe this.

It captures so much. There is fear and sadness in this picture, yet there are ancient and spiritual tones. I'm very impressed.

Thank you very much. I actally got the references for this from a photo of a cathedral, so the words you use to describe it are eerily what I intended. I imagine 'tis a group of pilgrims, but I'm not sure. I think there may also be a snippet of the Magi. Either way, I'm very glad you like it.

Oh, thank you! And thank you so much for the fav!

I was actually suprised by the cross-hatching on this one; sometimes my attempts end up a little more like chicken-scratches in strange directions...

Thanks! I just loved the picture, and I was a bit wary of doing any of the million animal pictures that seemed available; so much fur...

Yep. She was..OK. It always struck me as a little odd that the debate teacher also taught art.

Question from me and my ignorance, but how does this "scratchboard" work?

Other than that it BLEW MY MIND!!!
BLEWS TO BOMBLYINES
BOMBLY
^-^
Its fun to find old things isnt it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

orphicfiddler In reply to kitit21 [2008-06-10 15:14:38 +0000 UTC]

Scratchboard is essentially a kind of paper with a thick-ish layer of black over white; you use a little tool that looks a bit like an old-fashioned pen to scratch off the black, like reverse pen and ink, kinda. It's loads of fun.

And thank you! Bombly, bombly... I wish to say that word over and over. It makes me smile.

Have you tried? I would. What could it hurt?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

orphicfiddler In reply to LeonieSainteVire [2008-06-09 15:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps... Though I'd probably have more luck mentioning it to an individual professor who was actually involved in the publishing process. I've got a decent amount of connections in the psych and lit departments, but I only know one of the philosophy teachers pretty well.

Scratchboard is such a difficult medium, but the shading (well, reverse-shading) is wonderfully done, and there are so many folds to worry about.

Wow.

orphicfiddler In reply to pardonM3 [2008-06-07 02:00:03 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I suppose I must be horribly perverse, but folds and hair are actually my two favorite things to draw. Masochism? Perhaps.
