Gorgeous. I love the subtlety of it.

Thank you My original concept had scrolls, texts, and other stuff but in the end I cut in all in favour of a simple design that made the apple the real focus.

Really glad you like it though!

I think it came out beautifully with the simple motif.

It reminds me of a very subtle, cool, Snow White theme.

Maybe you can do others in a similar style for a fairy tail set, such as a glass slipper for Cinderella (blue hues), a spinning wheel for Sleeping Beauty (pink hues), and a lamp for Aladdin (lavender hues)(to name a few).

The Snow White theme was my original motif definately The text and scrolls were to include quotes from the original Grimm fairytail but yeah, I cut them cause they detracted from the over all look.

And I love that idea!! I may just plot something like that!

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-08 22:04:37 +0000 UTC]

I most definitely look forward to it.

If glass slippers aren't your thing, I'd also suggest a pumpkin (orange hues).

Other ideas to get your mind churning:

Thimble (Hmmm.. can't think of a color for that one, so I'll go with yellows)
Hooded Cape (Another red one, maybe darker?)
Rapunzel Plant (another purplish pink type?)
Tattered Shoes (silver or golden maybe...)

(can you tell I love fairy tales? )

Squee! Lots of great ideas and playing on the icons of the classics

I am also a big fan of fairy tales, folk tales and myths. I miss my big old brothers grimm books from when I was a kid but they got so worn out they were in tatters

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-09 09:29:54 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, another brainstorm!

You could totally do a greek icons one!

A lightning bolt for zeus, trident for poseidon, olive leaves for athena (or an owl)...

squee! The possibilities!

Yeah, I love the grimm stuff. I haven't the room now, but when I move out someday to a bigger place, I'd love to recollect old fairy tails. I've currently got one for Hans Christian Anderson tales and Lewis Carroll.

I have stacks of books on old myths and fairytales, but yeah, most of my books are in storage until I get the room for them too. I loves me some books, I am a totaly junkie bookworm.

Same here! Recently, I've gotten back into trying to draw, it's just I don't have the time to really get into it during the week due to work and traveling to and from. But because I've started back up again, I've been an art book collecting junkie. I love manga and novels but money and space issues usually curb my wanting to buy all amazon can send.

pai-thagoras In reply to Melody-Kitn [2011-06-09 18:25:27 +0000 UTC]

haha yes, I have had to ban myself from amazon for a while. 1. I have piles of books all over my house and my boyfriends flat I haven't read, piles and boxes of ones I have read too P: I recently sold a lot of my art books and older books I really don't need anymore, mostly manga and japanese art books.

I would just be happy living in a library, or an amazon warehouse

Yeah, I'm the same way. I've yet to part with a lot of my books, even the ones I barely ever read.

I want the library Belle gets in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

I'd settle for a cozy bookshop even, lol.

Yeah, would love to be in a bookshop, but I would not want to sell any of them XD My older brother actually works in a university library but he may frown upon me moving into their basement, hehe

Well, see that's why a bookshop is perfect. You get to buy multiples and sell the extras!

Don't know if a uni library is for me though, too many coursework books!

Aaaaart

There are a few books I sort of fall asleep on.. and I'm sorry if you're a fan, but I just don't dare touch the Twilight novels. The die-hards scare me too much XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pai-thagoras In reply to Melody-Kitn [2011-06-09 22:32:56 +0000 UTC]

oh lord no! Wouldn't touch those books with a ten foot clown pole D: I enjoyed Anne Rice's vampire books to a point then she went a bit crazy and born-again christian and, all due respect to her and her religious choices but something like that can have a really heavy influence on a book about vampires But yeah, Twilight is very much not my thing and dear lord yes, the fans are scary! I prefer the really old school classic vampires if anything, not the new age glittery ones. I will stick with my Bram Stokers and at a push Anne Rice vampies

I have rarely put a book down and never picked it up again. I think I just need to keep my brain busy and they are a great outlet as well as some wonderful inspiration

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-10 07:58:37 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I'm glad I can help inspire someone, since I have a tough time trying to inspire myself XD
Well, more like.. I know what I want, but it sure well doesn't look as good as what's in my head.

I haven't read Anne Rice in ages.. not sure why I stopped. I do remember reading Queen of the Damned and then watching the movie and going 'Buh?!' I think I was most disappointed in not seeing the red-headed twins.

Movie to book and book to movie translations always throw me off, but I still end up reading/watching them anyways.

Are you a manga reader too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pai-thagoras In reply to Melody-Kitn [2011-06-10 10:44:25 +0000 UTC]

It was Memnoch the Devil that ruined Anne Rice for me. It was the first weird religious derailment. The Queen of the Damned movie broke my brain, it was just so so wrong D: I am always very skeptical of book/comics to movies and often find the reverse movie to books a bit odd because the first book is always limited by the range of the movie but following books then have the air of fan fiction and then people can argue the whole 'not official canon' and the like. Usually though, if the book is a good read I don't mind I think though, and loads of people may be angered by this, that I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings films over the books. Tolkien is no doubt an masterful writer and the father of the fantasy novel, but I find his writing style far too self gratifying and I don't want to spend 3 or more pages just reading about how pretty a rock is. I think the films were a great distillation of the LotR story and brought out Tolkien's characters and beauty of the world without overshadowing everything with a long winded presentation.

And yes, I have been reading mangas since the late 80s, early 90s to be honest a lot of my childhood was taking up drawing ghibli cartoon characters and early manga/anime characters like Pai from 3x3 Eyes (she is part of my username too, I love Pai ) and bizarrely drawing characters from Akira when it was first released. Shame that the version of Ghibli and Lupin cartoons I watched when I was really little were badly redited and dubbed english ones. I am totally a subbed anime fan now thanks to that! My dad was pretty good at tracking down videos for me until I managed to go and find stores that actually sold either good quality dubs or subs and mangas I don't read as many as I used to though, I have a few in my current 'to read' pile but not as many as I used too.

Weeeee! Long reply

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-10 13:01:05 +0000 UTC]

*Long replies are awesome-

Omg, I definitely agree with you about LOTR, though I'm more guilty of not having read the books at all. I did try... once. But it took forever to get past descriptions of shire hill that I immediately gave up for lack of actually getting to the plot within the first 20 or so pages!

To an extent, I can forgive most movies for deviating from canon and leaving out key parts, though it's hard for me to explain why it works with some movies and not others. Same goes for video game to movie. I can appreciate the effort that went into the Silent Hill movie (even with the stiff acting from some of the females), but I can't forgive Resident Evil (no matter how brainlessly fun some scenes are in some of the movies).

I have to admit, I was a bit of a ghibli snob as well. I got irritated at how amazingly fast it became mainstream, and never did watch a lot of the stuff because of that. I only ended up watching Kiki's Delivery service because it was on the Disney channel. I have my brother to thank for introducing me to anime, but I've only lately really started digging into manga. I hate that a lot of the good ones aren't published, even worse how long it takes to get a translation done and printed. It gets to the point where I have to hold off reading some series until a full scanlation is up since I'll power through it, and if I find it vastly enjoyable, will buy my favorite volumes first (if they end up cancelling the series mid-publish, I won't have wasted my money getting an unfinished collection).

Whew.. long reply too!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pai-thagoras In reply to Melody-Kitn [2011-06-10 21:51:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I don't usually mind things going outside of canon, it's just when they pretty much rewrite characters, storylines or just snip out all the good stuff from a series of books, etc and cram it into one film, usually badly. But some films that 'reboot' characters or take a concept/story arc and reimagine it can work really well

I totally understand the manga frustration. When I started buying them it was when the only publishers who would touch them translated was Dark Horse and they would flip the artwork to read left to right which would ruin the flow slightly and also make some the art look wrong, and when they translated they tended to just rewrite dialogue to the closest recognisable western phrases and would end up making very little sense! But yes, I was always thankful for scanlations and fansubs by the time I hit my teens but it was sooo frustrating waiting week to week like you say

There's a lot I'm trying to keep up with and yet there's more that I haven't even tried to pick up cause I know I'll catch up too fast with it and be forced to wait.

I've lately been seduced by Ouran Host Club and Yumeiro Patissiere. I'm a sucker for happy ending romances.

Went to watch Pirates last night to celebrate the hubby's bday, hence the late response XD

pai-thagoras In reply to Melody-Kitn [2011-06-11 11:04:53 +0000 UTC]

Ouran Host Club a really sweet series, I usually don't enjoy the girly romance shoujos but I quite enjoy it, the anime is very cute too I am all worked up about manga now, I may try and sneak an hour reading in later today, but the housework and a pile of unfinished cards and pillow cases are trying to steal all my attention

Hope you had a good night and your hubby had a good birthday!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-11 11:44:09 +0000 UTC]

I had absolutely no clue what Ouran was or why I even picked it up to read in the first place. I just realized, after the first chapter, it was a freaking hilarious manga that didn't take itself seriously with the characters. Once I realized that, I was hooked. The icing on the cake was that it also happened to be a sweet romance story with a kickass ending. I won't spoil it for you, but I've read the manga and am catching up with the anime atm.

I'm disappointed they use Renge as much as they do in the anime.. she's irritating sounding. I've only the dubbed version, haven't found a subtitled one. I might tolerate her more in her proper voice.

Yeah, got lots to catch up on too, as well as trying to squeeze a drawing in so I can keep practicing x.x

His birthday is actually today, and he seems pretty happy, so all is well.

Thanks

Yeah, a friend of mine gave me a disk with it and most of the anime on and I pretty much didnt move till I was finished XD If you haven't read them and you like the more tongue and cheek series I would recommend Azumanga Daioh and Great Teacher Onizuka. Both have amused me far too much I would definately recommend the dubbed anime over the subbed. Voices work much much better.

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-11 20:16:27 +0000 UTC]

I've heard Azumanga tossed around a bit, so I'll take you up on that and Great Teacher. Gotta find something to read in the midst of waiting on Naruto, Will-Never-Be-Done-Hunter-X-Hunter, Taking-Forever-To-Get-Back-To-The-Plot-Gakuen Alice, Fairy Tail, Yumeiro Omg-I-Read-To-Far-In-And-Have-To-Wait-For-The-Next-Chapter Patissiere, Ghost-Why-Didn't-They-Finish-It?!-Only or even Zombie-Never-Gonna-End-Now-Loan (too much?).

I finally finished my second ever paperback collection tho, and it was one I didn't think I'd ever read at all... Beauty Pop. Heard of it?

pai-thagoras In reply to Melody-Kitn [2011-06-12 11:29:38 +0000 UTC]

No, never read Beauty Pop or heard of it actually. Will make note and investigate I keep meaning to catch up on Yu Watase mangas, I started reading her romantic comedy style piece Absolute Boyfriend but lost track of it in my final year of university when my dissertation totally highjacked my life P: Lots of shinies to look up and read me thinks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-13 07:47:56 +0000 UTC]

I hadn't either.. it was one of my random picks on a bored afternoon from MangaFox. The main character in it is so aloof and seems disinterested in everything, but secretly is still a softie for helping to distraught... with haircuts. Yeah, it's a hairdressing manga. That's what totally threw me off. But beyond that, its got sweet characters, so I just got addicted. And since it's only 10 volumes, didn't take long to blow through.

Yes, so much to read and collect, so little time!

The only one I fear trying to catch up with is One Piece. Every time I start it back up again, I end up reading something else XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pai-thagoras In reply to Melody-Kitn [2011-06-14 11:29:13 +0000 UTC]

hehe well it does sound rather unusual! I think I will definately have a look into it

I have to say, One Piece never really pulled my attention. I tried to watch it when the anime first started on cartoon network but I just couldn't get into it, that kind of put me off reading the manga. I keep thinking I should give it a try, but then I get distracted by something else

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Melody-Kitn In reply to pai-thagoras [2011-06-14 11:42:13 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! I get distracted just as I reach a point where I've finally caught up to where I last left off. I don't doubt it'd be something I could get into, like Naruto.. only with pirates, but I just can't seem to stick with it. And it's a lot of chapters to catch up to.

Fairy Tail, I've been addicted to, but I stopped myself somewhere way back when so I couldn't catch up to the latest episode again. I just like manga with lots of quirky characters too. That's why I loved playing video games like Suikoden. 100+ characters? Yes, please! Makes encylopedia of character books my favorite too, lol.

Currently, I'm obsessing over Yumeiro Patissiere, but I've gotten brickwalled since it's fairly new, no new scanlations, and no english publisher for me to buy from D:

Yay! I'll be doing a big move soon, and I'm gonna so relish having slightly more time and space for more books and drawing~

Mangafox is a great resource, a shame OneManga went down when it did.

If you've got an android phone or iphone, I can recommend some manga reading apps for on the go too

What's your top five reads you think you'll go for?

Fairy Tail is pretty awesome for random characters, so I do recommend it!
