Description Yet another byproduct of breaking between commissions. AUGH. This one was worked on while I waited for a watercolor commission to dry off and on between layers... slow going, that's for sure.

Here we have a mutt of a pallanoph, likely of European descent, but who knows? She is also a heap of recessive genes, hence the very unusual roan like coloration. This peculiar creature might survive well at more northern latitudes, and likely on scrubby, rocky slopes. That's the image my mind conjures up, at least!

Gouache on some mysterious fiberboard. Roughly 7" x 11", I think... not too large.

She's not the prettiest of creatures, but I'll place the blame on her having borrowed her creator's face. But that's okay.

Thank you! I think the only times things happen like this is when it's something I'm completely ridiculously obsessive over... like pallanophs. I am so easily distracted, so it's hard to keep my mind to any task.

Thankies! And it is my pallanoph self! I debated the roan spots for a long time, but then decided that it would be more interesting than solid white with darker points.

Ah yes, I think I might have thought of ermines a few times while brainstorming this particular critter... Especially since this one is longer in the body than the others!

Excellent question! Gouache is a little understood medium. It's often referred to as "opaque watercolor" though it definitely has it's own set of characteristics that set it apart from any other medium. Some say it's comparable to tempera in its dried texture (sort of velvety, matte and vaguely chalk-like). Gouache is really smooth and flows well, and one of its most noticeable traits is that it will reconstitute if touched with a wet brush. This makes it a bit of a challenge to layer tones on top of one another. However! This makes them easier to blend long after the paint has been laid down. As far as thickness, it varies, depending on the water content one desires. I will say that it's thinner than most fluid acrylics.
