Teacher's fault! The notes are from our ongoing User Experience Design course. I study Multimedia production.

Aha, lol.
Oh, cool! I study Media & Communications, which is lower level I guess (as I'm still in upper secondary) and encompasses Multimedia Production (which is where I learnt about AIDAS, in fact) and some other classes. So yeah

You're fixating on the markings is your problem. Focus instead on the silhouette and shape. The markings are secondary to all that.

Paperiapina In reply to FablePaint [2011-10-12 22:12:18 +0000 UTC]

Wow, the problem actually got solved.
I always thought I already had her design (shape wise) ready and set, as I originally based her on an old character of mine adopted from a long lost project. Your comment made me analyze the character with my brainstorm buddy, and the problem was pinpointed to the fact that the Wurr character had evolved way past the old character and was now nothing alike, the mental image of the old one was dragging me down. I mentally killed the old character (tore half of its character sheet apart with my teeth. It was fun), made a new sketch of the shape I wanted it to have, and magic happened. The character designed itself in a matter of minutes.
Thanks!

FablePaint In reply to Paperiapina [2011-10-12 22:19:30 +0000 UTC]

No prob. I see it a lot among many canine artists. There's a tendency among those of us who draw dogs to fixate on markings since that's what you THINK you notice first. In reality, it's the shape you notice first. That's subconscious. It's why your other canines, the hellhounds especially, stand out so much. They all have very distinctive shapes that speak to their character and make them distinct. If you start focusing on markings instead of that, it's when you'll run into problems. Your brain was telling you that, hence the block.
Character design 101 and something that needs to probably get spread around more on DA. I'm glad I was helpful and I look forward to seeing this character in your comic. It's a delightful read.

Paperiapina In reply to FablePaint [2011-10-12 22:53:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Markings are just decoration, and extra work you have to draw over and over and over again. Hah, I made the hounds to have minimal markings, and I went on the other extreme by kind of becoming obsessed with making this one have as non-unusual and un-special markings as I could while still having some, and failed miserably untill I fixed her general shape.

I will hereby proceed to slap myself.

Aww, thanks! She will be quite important character from book three and onwards. Maybe something like twenty or thirty pages untill her appearance, depending on how I end up starting the third part.

I personally love the design on the second page directly under the A. I love the way it kind of sculpts the shoulder blade and flows into a nice cape on the back. Although I don't really have any feelings on the design's mask...

Looks like you're modeling after the German Shepherd? The acronym and the first two pages of design concepts were what made me think this. And I agree, conceptualization is a pain sometimes (or a lot of times, for me).

Silmetrion In reply to ArcticLoneWolf [2011-10-12 21:55:45 +0000 UTC]

AIDA/AIDAS is a common acronym in advertising. It has to do with making the customer buy things and is irrelevant to GSDs.

Silmetrion In reply to ArcticLoneWolf [2011-10-13 11:48:30 +0000 UTC]

Me neither, I know it because it's part of the curriculum for Media & Communications (which, here, you need to do if you want to get into photography/film/multimedia production/graphic design/etc.). Still don't get why you thought it had to do with GSDs though

ArcticLoneWolf In reply to Silmetrion [2011-10-13 18:25:58 +0000 UTC]

It seemed to fit with the breed's attitude/temperament. They're very attentive; they are eager to learn and work, and do so cheerfully (interest); they have a desire to please; and are intelligent enough to take action when necessary, such as protecting their owner. Action also reminded me of police and military work that the breed is often chosen to do.

That's the best way I can explain it. My thinking process isn't exactly linear lol

Silmetrion In reply to ArcticLoneWolf [2011-10-13 18:31:13 +0000 UTC]

Ah, right. That's actually a good description of the breed so I can understand why you thought so, haha.
