Wait a minute.... giving the picture a good look, I see that the shadow at the bottom right is just about where the planet's shadow would be. So that part is right. Hmmm.... I guess it would probably look right if the shadow was a little darker, but I'm not certain if that would be correct.

Yeah, I'll take a good look at it and see if anything different would work. Thanks a bunch for the kind and constructive criticism!

Mistshadow2k4 [2006-02-14 14:28:24 +0000 UTC]

I agree that the planet needs a shadow, but most of the shadow would be off-camera due to the angle. "Too solid and intimidating"? It's common to make planets in the look transparent, and while that's very pretty, it's also wrong. Go outside and look at a full moon sometime - how transparent does it look? Not all of course, it's a solid object. Now imagine if were much, much bigger. It also would look frighteningly close as this planet does.

moonfullofstars [2006-02-14 11:05:13 +0000 UTC]

I really like the colour scheme. I don't think I've seen a snowy space scene before! Nebula is looking pretty awesome too, though I think I might agree with zebravissimo about the sharpening, at least of the stars. Though I can't be sure without comparing. *sharpens* Oh yes, I think it looks prettier that way. But that would be your call, of course. Maybe you're going for a more dreamy effect with the blur. Anyway, great work

Parad1gm In reply to moonfullofstars [2006-02-14 16:13:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i smoothed it a bit because there were a LOT of artifacts and noise in the nebulas that I had a hard time removing. I could sharpen them back up, but it may bring back some of the artifacts...I dunno, what do you think? The dreamy effect is something I was kind of going for as well though...

moonfullofstars In reply to Parad1gm [2006-02-15 02:14:31 +0000 UTC]

I see. Well if it's any consolation, I can't see any artifacts when I sharpen it. I'm not sure what you're referring to. But if they bother you, perhaps you could try just sharpening here and there (some of the stars) with a brush. Maybe. I don't know, I just think it looks prettier when the stars sparkle more, though I'm not sure how sharp the nebula needs to be. One thing I don't like when I sharpen the whole thing though is that the top right hand corner looks too star-filled. As for the whole shadow issue, I'm no expert but it seems to me, as someone else said, that the shadows would be out of the picture due to the placement of the light sources.

smazat-do-kose [2006-02-14 10:03:41 +0000 UTC]

something makes me feel like there is something missing...for some reason it seems as though maybe there should be a shadow under the big planet, just because it's so close and there is light farther away. I don't know, for some reason it just feels like it needs a shadow...everyone needs a shadow. Good job AJ!

Yeah, i understand what you mean. A few people have commented on this also, so I'm going to take a look at the piece and maybe submit a version 2 of it. We'll see...thanks for the constructive criticism!

Interesting name n_n.

I like how you used different things from different people then and made it your very own stylish piece n_n. I hope you'll someday be able to do planets yerself cause then it will feel even more rewarding!

Great piece for your come back Good work indeed! (especially the Nebula 0_0 weeee)

Parad1gm In reply to RayFalling [2006-02-14 16:15:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I have done a couple planets myself, but nothing that can compare to *Mr-Frenzy 's I hope to be at that level someday, but I need quite a bit of practice first. I didn't want an ugly planet to ruin this piece!

When comparing non-tablet work with tablet work 0_0 you can seriously see the difference. And the beauty of it is, you dont even need that much talent. 0_0 I was close to reaching simillar effects use a mouse 0_0 n_n;

zebravissimo [2006-02-13 23:59:40 +0000 UTC]

Pretty good The planet looks way too solid and intimidating though, maybe work with the opacity a bit. The rest of the space also seems kinda blurred, maybe some sharpening would be in order But really, it's good.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Parad1gm In reply to zebravissimo [2006-02-14 16:16:12 +0000 UTC]

I dropped the opacity a bit on the planet to make it a bit darker and less menacing. As far as the sharpening, I smoothed it a bit to get rid of some artifacts and noise that showed up when I looked at the piece up close. I could sharpen it back up, but the noise may come back...and i'm a bit worried about that...
