This is my first drawing after a 2 month sabbatical, so I wanted to attempt something 'easy' to break myself back into it - the reason for the break was I recently moved from Shanghai (China) to Cornwall (England) and during those 2 months I have been constructing my very own studio (more on that in an upcoming journal), so not only is this the first drawing for a couple of months it's the first drawing in my new studio
It was only whilst uploading this drawing to DA that I realised I had drawn Tom before this particular portrait would have suited white on black as it was extremely dark and most of the detail had been lost in the shadows - so a little bit of 'artistic' licence was called for in some of the details
Drawn as always on Bristol Board Smooth A3 Paper using a range of Faber Castell Pencils and erasers - time about 10 hours work

How do you draw such small detailed lines? Like the creases in the skin. This is absolutely incredible and would love to know how to do it.

I generally use a very sharp pencil or a 0.3 - 0.5mm mechanical pencil along with a tomo zero eraser which allows for very fine work

The textures and details in his face!! It's beautiful! I really lIke all of the heavy shadows, it makes the portrait feel balanced to me, in a way. Very impressive

Thanks for the feedback - it is appreciated, the original reference was a completely black photo (black back ground and very heavy shadows and contrast) so I wasnt sure its was going to work with a white background and more highlighst (still not completely sure) but glad you like it
