Description John Knowles' A Separate Peace with the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever"

Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
But it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me
This is what Gene think's Finny's always doing at first. Being something he's not to earn the affection of the entire school, all the while not getting, understanding anything. It turns out Finny does misunderstand quite a bit anyway.

No one I think is in my tree
I mean it must be high or low
That is you know you can't tune in
But it's all right
That is I think it's not too bad
Well, look at the picture. Gene's jumping out after having just shaken Finny out at the end of the fourth chapter. Also, Finny's tone deaf.

Always know sometimes think it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know I mean "Yes"
But it's all wrong
That is I think I disagree
The boys confuse their own identities and purposes with each others' more and more throughout the book.

Special thanks to ~SChedgehogxX . And thank you to *HellzGranny for scanning for me =3

Beautiful, especially the way you used the song to relate.

Quick story: we had to do a song review for ASP for Eng. class (find a song that relates to your assigned character), and I had Leper, and this was one of the songs I chose, but we ended up using a different one (I was in a group). I love this song and like it applied more to Gene and Finny better.

It works really well with Leper, too. Really, it's about someone who thinks so uniquely that they feel as though the rest of the world is on a different level.

Thanks much, though!

*Yes. I am catching up on a backlog of dev alerts. Sorry for the spam. *

Beautiful composition. Feels so summer and idyllic with just that bit of dark atmosphere that reflects the events you describe in the comments.

Still haven't read the book, but this picture draws me in none the less.

I like the way you've caught Gene in mid-leap.

Me too. I learned so much by forcing this project on myself. Kinda like a baby in the deep-end; I didn't know I could swim so well.

Swim you do. Keeping pushing yourself.

Agh. I... I didn't even get that Finny's supposed to be lying on the ground. His expression is a bit too peaceful and he needs a shadow, but mostly it's just that I'm a fucking retard. :B How could I ot get that? His *leg* is *red* for crying out loud. I'm dense.

The picture is gorgeous. Ignore me.

...He doesn't have a shadow; he's Finny.

StoriesThatNeverWere [2008-08-16 00:46:09 +0000 UTC]

As soon as I saw the picture I knew what scene this was. It always struck me as odd that Gene jumped off the tree after knocking Finny over, as though it had yet to faze him what he did.

The picture is stunning. An emotionless Gene leaps high into the air, unaware that the death of his best friend has just been predestined. Finny lays on the ground, distorted and confused even in his unconscious state. Both boys look beautiful against the summer backdrop, but the most outstanding feature is the robin-egg blue of Gene's eyes. I don't know whether you intended that as your focal point, but I find it endearing. It captures the innocence that Gene is about to lose.

Lovely as always, Jack.

I didn't imply any focal point, actually, but if it's Par--I mean, Gene's eyes, that's perfect, isn't it? Thank you so much for your always wonderful comments.
