Description 'Then the Captain of Morgoth sent out riders with tokens of parley, and they rode up before the outworks of the Barad Eithel. With them they brought Gelmir son of Guilin, that lord of Nargothrond whom they had captured in the Bragollach; and they had blinded him. Then the heralds of Angband showed him forth, crying: 'We have many more such at home, but you must make haste if you would find them; for we shall deal with them all when we return even so.' And they hewed off Gelmir's hands and feet, and his head last, within sight of the Elves, and left him.
By ill chance, at that place in the outworks stood Gwindor of Nargothrond, the brother of Gelmir. Now his wrath was kindled to madness, and he leapt forth on horseback, and many riders with him; and they pursued the heralds and slew them, and drove on deep into the main host.'

The final illustration requested by Warner Bros which makes an appearance in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies 3D Extended Edition DVD & Blu-ray box-set, in a 'Making of ...' documentary  (2015). I was asked to create an image of Elves looking 'fierce' in battle, and to base it roughly on the template established in one of my older paintings The Ride of the Rohirrim .

Painted in watercolour, with a hint of white gouache. Check out the line-work for this piece by clicking on the following:

Idiotic but understandable - you try and sit there and take if a loved one of yours was blinded and hacked to death in front of you .... !!!

understandable yes, but it cost Fingon and and so many their lives. Whole lot of good that charge did him.

That may have happened anyway, regardless. And was it him and him alone or the Doom of Mandos at work? And if not for the Doom at work, how would Earendil have come to the Hither Shores asking for pardon and help on behalf of the Children?

As you can see I'm obsessed with the interplay between freewill and determinism, not just in Tolkien

Very true, they still would've been beaten regardless I think because they were trying to defeat a Vala and they were warned Morgoth could not be destroyed by any power of the Elves or Men.
Battle of Unnumbered Tears never had a truer name.

This is an excellent picture, which really gets into its theme. The art style is more like Victorian Medieval Revival and less "period", which is alright, my pesudo-historic archeology can only go so far! The energy and vigor of the assault of Gwindor's company is magnificent, all vim and vigor and uncaring that they are starting the battle at the wrong time and place. I had no idea you had been asked to do movie-related art, congratulations on a plum commission!

peet In reply to Zeonista [2015-10-04 11:12:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much, really glad you enjoy! Yes I suppose medieval revivalism is what I go for a bit. I think it applies particularly well to Tolkien since he mentions on numerous occasions that his work is in many ways akin to 19C Romanticism (and which I obviously must have sensed upon first reading). So I guess if the glove fits ...

Likewise, thanks very much for the congrats! Actually, I was asked to contribute my very old painting Beren and Luthien  to the DoS EE last year, and contacted again for this year's instalment. The idea was to contribute possibly 4 or so paintings which already existed, and to create more especially for the purpose. In the end, I had about 10-11 pieces in total on standby, out of which four have made the final cut - this obviously being one of them.

I have to say, it's slightly surreal to be contributing to these as I'm really not a fan of Jackson-verse Tolkien (as I think you might know based on an exchange we had about that on Turner Mohan's page last year [incidentally, I apologise if I came across rather brusquely there, it was a troubling time for me health-wise and I was psychologically in a bad place as a result; then again, this may not have even registered, so you might be thinking 'what the hell is this guy talking about here?' ]). However, I'm definitely more amenable to the work put into those films as opposed to the final result, so to contribute to the 'making of' documentaries is something I was happy to do. That, and I'm a starving artist who can't be too picky about what I do or don't accept work-wise - or something like that .

VassternichDraukaART [2015-07-22 17:42:42 +0000 UTC]

Your composition is awesome! It reminds me of the scene in The Fellowship of the Ring when the ford at Rivendell washes away the Black Riders. The horses in the water were all distinct, but they were all part of the same pressing mass. I'm getting the same feel from this, and it really lends itself to the imagery of a "charge". Also, the textures in this are amazing!  I have never been able to get watercolors to do what I want them to. How do you get this much control over them? I can never get the colors to blend without ruining each other.

Thank you very much! Watercolours can be fiddly, but I've been painting/practising with them for over a decade now so I guess I manage to handle them okay nowadays Actually, I've noticed that my technique is slightly more solid and less 'watery' than most watercolourists, for some reason. This might be partially attributable to the fact that I don't tend to use watercolour paper, but actually heavy duty cartridge paper (not always but probably 75% + of the time). It works well, I find, for filling in the colours between detailed line work, which is normally how I go about things.

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to see if I can get my hands on some different types of papers. What kind of watercolors do you use? I have tube paints and gouche, and I used a classroom set of cake paints when I was first learning. I liked the way the cake paints went on, because they seem to retain the transparent look that everyone associates with watercolors. I've only used the tube paints once, and they were super opaque and I had a bear of a time actually blending them. Haven't tried the gouche yet, mostly out of paranoia.... I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to watercolors. Thanks again for the suggestions!

peet In reply to VassternichDraukaART [2015-08-27 11:29:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, sorry for the late response! I use Windsor & Newton Pro watercolours, in tube form. I used to prefer the cakes like you when I started, but in the end I found the pro tubes are much better quality (hence the 'pro' tag of course); it just took me a while to accept that, I guess (and to be prepared to spend the extra cash on them!).

The colours are so much more radiant though, I find, compared to my earliest paintings. So I really recommend them (not necessarily W&N, but pro-quality). As for transparency and opacity, this actually depends on the particular colour you use. Check out the chart on this link, which might prove useful www.winsornewton.com/uk/discov…

VassternichDraukaART In reply to peet [2015-08-27 18:03:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the link! I'll keep that in mind when I do my color picking from now on. When you use the the tube colors, how do you do it? It's been almost four years (O.o) since I've touched my tube paints, but I remember getting really frustrated with them because when I tried to mix them the way I'd mix the cake paints (get the brush wet, rub it on the pigment, "paint" a clear section of the palette, then do the same thing with another pigment and mix until I get the desired color), the paint would suck itself up the bristles of the brush and I couldn't get them to mix with each other and it felt like they were getting stuck in the brush and just making all my colors muddy. Now, I'd been taking art for a grand total of two semesters, so this may have just been a severe case of the n00bishness, and I haven't tried it since.... But any tips for getting tube watercolors to play nicely?

peet In reply to VassternichDraukaART [2015-08-30 14:39:36 +0000 UTC]

No problem. The trick I think is to buy a big palette, or buy quite a few separate ones, and to squeeze a liberal amount of the paint onto it. Then, don't be afraid to use a lot of water - lots and lots of water. Use tiny beakers to pour the water into the palette, rather than relying solely on the brush soaking the water up. After that's done, get a big bowl of separate water for your brush(es). With a thicker brush, dip the brush in the water so that it soaks all the H2O up, and keep mixing the colours together until you get the desired pigment. Again, keep dipping the brush and adding more water if need be - don't be afraid of that; the trick is to be really, really liberal with the water then once you've 'created' the colour you want, you can go from there. Clean the brush up, replace the bowl of water if you need to, and use smaller brushes to start painting and continue in this vein

VassternichDraukaART In reply to peet [2015-08-31 03:32:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for the advice! I've been moseying about YouTube for the last couple days, looking for suggestions, and I think I'm going to start working on basic color charts so I can get to know my paints a little better. I'm really trying to understand more of color theory in general, so I'm hoping this will help me wrap my head around how to make the colors do what I want. My strongest mediums when I was taking art class were graphite and colored pencil, and my teacher had these giant sets of 72/124/136 Prismacolor pencils, and I'd always pick the largest one available because I knew I was more likely to find the exact color I wanted. Whenever I had to work with a smaller pallet, I felt really nervous because I always felt like I was missing colors and I didn't know how to get them. Thank you so much for all your advice! You've made me want to brave watercolors again.

Well, I haven't got too far yet, but considering I haven't touched my paints since 2011, even getting them out is a bit of a feat. It's funny you chose today to follow up. I've been waffling back and forth trying to figure out how and what to work on. Trying to become better at art is tricking when you are fascinated by all the things. But last night, I decided to break out my paints and make a color palette and mixing sheet, because at least then I'd be doing something. I just posted a status on it with a picture of what I have so far.
