Description ‘The sword Anglachel was forged anew for him by cunning smiths of Nargothrond, and though ever black its edges shone with pale fire; and he named it Gurthang, Iron of Death. So great was his prowess and skill in warfare on the confines of the Guarded Plain that he himself became known as Mormegil, the Black Sword; and the Elves said: 'The Mormegil cannot be slain, save by mischance, or an evil arrow from afar.' Therefore they gave him dwarf-mail, to guard him; and in a grim mood he found also in the armouries a dwarf-mask all gilded, and he put it on before battle, and his enemies fled before his face.’

How do you go about painting horses? Do you generally reference photographs if they're in a position you're uncomfortable with?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to Cuthillius [2016-03-01 13:01:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes, exactly. I'll just find a reference and borrow accordingly, adding the appropriate harness/gear/costuming/armour and such like myself afterwards

It shows that you put a lot of work into the picture. Composition and coloring are really great, I especially like that bit of sky and landscape in the distance. The folds are especially amazing. I can´t help but think that he lower part of the picture would have to be darker, especially the underbellies of the horsies. But I might be wrong of course. The muscles of the horses are really well done and the spears support the composition nicely.

My sincere apologies for the late response, especially considering the kindness of the comment. I'm really glad you like this, and it's nice to receive compliments that hone in on certain aspects of the work, and why you happen to like them so much. As for the underbellies of the horses, you might be right about this. However, I suppose I simply wanted to juxtapose the lightness/whiteness of the elven steeds with the darkness of Mormegil's in the foreground, so as to accentuate the brooding darkness which defines his character. Whether or not adding some lowlights to their undersides would have undermined this idea is uncertain, I guess

No problem and you´re welcome ^^
I agree, for the sake of expression, drawings don´t need to strictly adhere to every rule of realism! It was just a thing I noticed.

I like both versions, tho in earlier Túrin looks surprised/shocked.. But in this his eyes are cold as steel, determined in whatever his mind is tasked for. I like how intimidating Túrin looks compared to elven host, black armor and dwarf-helmet with faceplate actually horrifies the enemies! One thing i dont quite like is that his sword (thought elven made) looks a bit small and frail. I dont mean it should be twohanded or even bastard sword, but it looks more like Sting (for stabbing), rather than sword able to cleave through orc ranks. Otherwise good work, and nice touch that darkening sky; menace and doom awaits this army.

peet In reply to CRPGMunin [2015-06-16 14:30:42 +0000 UTC]

Many thanks for the thoughtful comment. Re: Anglachel, I suppose that's basically down to preference; some have said it's exactly as they envisage it, and as the old adage has it you cannot please all!  Can't see how it looks like Sting - if a hobbit were in the frame, it'd probably be nearly as tall as them. But yes, I much prefer this version in general, it's truer to how I envisage both the scene and M-e in general

CRPGMunin In reply to peet [2015-06-16 19:35:41 +0000 UTC]

By referring Gurthang as Sting i did not meant the size, but maybe it is just in my head that sword looks a bit too slender. Well, it IS elven made sword, that means some kind of "delicate" form.
But this version is surely superb, i just love it. Not too many work of Túrin capture the darkness and menace that lies within him, and this is just what i see from him- his gaze!

peet In reply to CRPGMunin [2015-06-18 15:35:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm really flattered you approve . I think that grim dwarf-mask definitely accentuates his gaze and darkness, it kind of makes the mask come alive as it were, and I therefore hoped to capture the feeling that his foes would definitely be afraid of him. It's a bit like a samurai helm in that respect too, I suppose.

Have you seen my other Children of Hurin pieces? There're a few more representations of Gurthang not cut off from the frame which I've attempted, and may be more to your liking (or indeed, may not).

Again, many thanks. Yeah I much prefer this version for the reason you give It feels slightly more accurate and historical too. Funny though that this was actually started long before the other one - it remained merely a bust of the Mormegil for many years before I finally came back to it

Thank you - its great to read this. Funnily enough, prior to returning to painting in 2014 I barely did ANY whatsoever from c. 2009, when this one was made. So I'm guessing it's must purely have been increasing age - observation/rumination/deliberation and so on - that has helped me to pick up where I left off. And yes, hopefully improve
