It aggravates me so much seeing such low prices on Deviantart, so many people under price themselves. When I do commissions again I'm not going to be afraid to put the price high, I'm going to consider it professional work, so I'll work professionally with it, send terms and agreements, etc. If you go to a childrens illustrator and ask for a simple but cute illustration, it could easily cost you over 350$ that's the reality of artists' prices
But THEN??? PEOPLE ACTUALLY COMMENTING ON THESE ARTISTS' ALREADY LOW PRICES THAT THEY'RE TOO HIGH? Oh my GOD it pisses me off.

i remember when i first started out doing commissions, and at the time i was doing it at a really cheap price ($2 for a chibi). I also offered points at the time. I had someone tell me that my point commission where too expensive, even though they matched the $2 price and proceeded to call me a hog. I was so angry!!!
Some people are so rude!

I agree so much with this. I hate it when people say things like that. It's like going into a store and right in front of the owner (this is a self owned business BTW) claiming their prices are too high. It's rude, especially if the product is made with quality and effort.
If there is quality then the price automatically goes up. If there is a lot of time put into it, the price goes up even more.
That's just how it works.
I've seen way too many artists underpricing themselves here and it's hurting the view point of those who wish to purchase commissions. It forces them to believe that artwork of a certain quality has to be [this price] and that this kind of artwork has to be [that price].

this, exactly. there are a bunch of artists that price themselves super low, that it becomes a "standard" of some sorts, and if a different artist prices higher, then it's automatically ~overpricing~... sighs

There are people who DO price their art too high, however I have to agree with you, people who put a lot of work into their art do deserve to be rewarded But I suck so I don't understand completely especially if this is their main way of getting money, if they are saving for something important. So long as the art looks good and is not scruffy, then I dont mind paying £10 for a fullbody commission. People who price their work as £30 for a full body commission are a bit over the top though. Unless you are Jon-lock
There are people though who create adopts that are probably the most simple outfit design, then they try and sell it for a ridiculous price. I would only pay £25 for an adopt that is well made, well drawn and thought out Like most of your stuff. It's adorable people who make adopts that are like 'simple t-shirt' and 'pair of jeans' with a 'simple hair design' should only sell them for 50p to £1 (If they have a slight amount of detail)
But yeah, thats my opinion I'm pretty tired, so it might not make sense. You can ignore it if you like

ROFL yeah, i think it's all about establishing a balance, really! most people can tell anyway when an artist overprices... but i think sometimes, when artists overprice it's because they're usually very busy and a commission tends to take up a lot of their time! so i think it's worth it sometimes, but i totally agree with you on the overpriced simple designs omg x__x;;;
sorry for replying so late!!

Although I agree with you, I've seen artists who make their prices way too high without putting any effort into it. For example, I know one popular artist that spends like half an hour on a commission by now (while her original art is way better and takes way more time of course) and it sometimes looks really anatomically off and sketched even if the artist normally draws very well. She lets people pay prices up to 50$ without putting much effort into it and if I see things like that I have to agree that not everyone should make their prices as high as they think they should put them. In those cases I always die a little bit inside if people pay good money and receive commissions that could have been way better. If you commission an artist for a picture like seen in their gallery, good, effort taken pictures, then artists shouldn't let them pay a lot and just give them rushed pictures. So there are two kinds of artists in this case. But yes, I fully agree with you that no one should tell others how to set their prices. If it's too expensive for them they should just not buy it and that's it.

wow, really? i didn't know that and it honestly makes me sad. imagine paying good money and getting sloppy work in return ;;; damn. but at least those kinds of artists are the minority though, everyone i've seen so far do fantastic commissions, that's why i get really angry when someone says expensive when they're clearly not!! but thanks for letting me know about ~the other side~!

Yeaaah,I must agree ♥
Never happened to me, but anyway it´s still annoying.
I think tha problem is that most of people thinks art is easy to make. That it took less than 10 minutes and Ta-daaa ~ you have an ultra perfect done commission. People definitely should have some informetion before making those rude comments, seriously. Because even if they are not for me, I as an artist feel deeply angry, because I do know how many time and effort requires each work. I understand quality plays an important role on pricing, but even in the worst quality commissions/adopts/whatever, there´s a person behind doing an effort, and she can´t just make it for free. I mean, I´m not professional, I don´t have the best quality commission but each draw takes me lots of time, I could be using that time to study or something,I lost 4+ hours of my day and it´s kind of a sacrifice for me so I refuse to work on my art for 10 f*cking points. It´s even worse when someone appears like "oh,why don´t you draw for me FOR FREE?" If you want free art,go and draw for yourself ò_ó Oooops,and if I hadn´t said that before, artists have their lives, they can´t spend all the day devoted to work for you
I´m really mad each time I see really detailed artwork sold by 50 points or so. Of course the artist can do whatever she/he wants, but I don´t think it´s worth
Anyway,I don´t see the point on complaining about prices.Can´t afford for it? Don´t buy it! I can´t afford for lots of commissions (sadly,because if I had the money I´d pay happily!), but I won´t go asking "hey there, this is so expensive, can I pay u 40 points?" If you don´t have the money or think it´s expensive or anything just SHUT UP
whoops,this is too long,sorry

The worst part is that lots of artist who receive this kind of complaint, will actually listen to them. I myself am struggling to find what the right price for my works could be and it's hard to find the amount of self-confidence needed to impose a value to our works... ._.

aah i know how that feels! self-confidence is a huge factor in pricing work, i get really nervous when i post commission prices, i'm like.. am i overpricing? people might think it's too expensive for my crappy art aaah ;;; but in the end we should just really believe in ourselves and our skills more! *hugs*

Or to ask to friends to ask their friends to give a mark from 1 to 10 and why. So to see what the other people thinks about us °3°
Also, I've noticed that the works we like more ourselves are somehow more liked by others than the ones we had maybe spent more time over or are technically superior. In the end, it's all about the heart we put in it xD
And if your art is crappy, then I don't know what can be considered good. It's so full of colors and everything's so cute and detailed and... *A*

aaaagghh yes yes yes! That's seriously such a shitty thing to do!
Especially since there seems to be a lot of people who are waaay underpricing themselves anyway, because people think paying more that 5/10$ for art is ridiculously expensive when no, it's not. It's really really really not.
I don't think I've ever ever seen adopts or commissions that I think are too expensive, I mean yeah there's plenty of times when I'm in the position where I personally can't quite afford to commission someone, but their work is definitely worthy of the prices they set, and they deserve it! But… I have seen loads of people underprice themselves, selling really detailed work for less that $10 ;__;
it's really sucky… if you like their work but can't afford it yet, then you should save up!! You wouldn't just demand a new phone or car or game or something but say you want a cheaper price, it just doesn't work like that, and neither do commissions!! D;

Yes, I agree. And art is subjective, It cannot be beautiful to everyone or ugly to everyone either, it's all about taste. You cannot simply say that someone's work isn't worth it (unless he was approached for some advice). If someone thinks it's not worth it, then just simply go away from the post and buy the ones that he thinks is valuable. It's that simple.

UUUGH OMG THANK YOU
it also depends on the situation too because sometimes it takes me x amount to draw up something, but other times it takes twice or 3x as long because 1) I'm busy and 2) I was having a terrible art block while working on it. So if people wonder why my adopt prices are inconsistent, it's because the time and effort spent on them are also inconsistent.
And who set the line anyway? So many artists are underpaid on this site, it's not even funny. Because everyone else's prices are set below what it's worth, all of a sudden it makes others' who charge more seem more expensive than it their skill is "worth".
